OMAHA, Neb. -

The Providence College men's soccer team, a No. 6 seed, was defeated by No. 2 seed Creighton, 2-1, in the Semifinal game of the BIG EAST Championship on Thursday, Nov. 12 in Omaha, Neb. The Friars finished the season with an 8-7-3 record.

In the 33rd minute of the game, Creighton's Joel Rydstrand scored an unassisted goal. Redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper Ben Segulic was brought out of position after back-to-back Creighton shots. Creighton's shot was deflected by redshirt-freshman Klisman Sousa (Sal, Cape Verde) in an attempt to clear, but Rydstrand grabbed the rebound and notched a goal into the bottom left side of the net.

With just two minutes left in the first, Creighton had three corner kicks that Segulic was able to punch out in attempts to clear. For the first 45 minutes, Segulic recorded just one save. The first half ended with a 1-0 lead from the Bluejays, who also held the advantage in shots (9-6) and corner kicks (4-2).

In the 55th minute, Creighton registered a foul inside the box and a penalty kick was awarded to Providence. Junior Julian Gressel (Neustadt an der Aisch, Germany) converted the free-kick to tie the game, 1-1.

In the 67th minute, Providence registered a foul and a penalty kick was given to Creighton. Fabian Herbers took the shot to the top middle of the net and scored to give the Bluejays a 2-1 lead.

The Friars best chance came in the 80th minute after a corner kick was taken by Sousa. The kick was cleared but the Friars maintained possession. Freshman Tiago Mendonca (Faro, Portugal) tallied a shot that was blocked and deflected to redshirt-sophomore Mark Jecewiz (Smithtown, N.Y.) who headed it but was cleared by Creighton. Freshman Brendan Constantine (Glastonbury, Conn.) registered one last shot in that span, but his shot was too high.

The game ended with a 2-1 BlueJay win, as well as Creighton leading in shots (18-16) and fouls (16-11).
