LOUISVILLE, KY. - The Providence College field hockey team fell to top-seeded and third-ranked Syracuse, 3-1, in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship on Friday, November 2 in Louisville, Ky. The Friars conclude their season with a 9-9 overall record, while the Orange advance to the title game with a 17-1 record.
Syracuse took got on the board at the 20:18 mark for a 1-0 lead as Laura Hahnefeldt converted a penalty corner opportunity, assisted by Jordan Page. The Orange tacked on a second goal at 31:35 as Gillian Pinder fed Kelsey Millman in front of the cage. It marked Millman's 12th goal of the season.
Providence wasted little time getting on the board in the second half as sophomore All-BIG EAST First Team honoree Henni Tietze (Sankt Augustin, Germany) netted her team-best 11th goal of the year just 1:05 into the action. Her goal came off a penalty corner, assisted by sophomore Kaleigh FitzPatrick (Dedham, Mass.) and junior Caitlin Malone (Ossining, N.Y.).
The Friars were unable to hold on to the momentum as Syracuse tallied its third goal of the game at 45:13 to take a 3-1 advantage. Pinder found the back of the cage after dribbling into the circle from the left side and firing a shot from the top of the circle.
Providence senior goalkeeper Kathi Weidman (Millersville, Pa.) collected nine saves in the loss. Orange goalkeepr Leann Stiver recorded two saves in the victory.
