PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team used strong pitching to defeat the University of Connecticut, 3-1 and 6-0, in a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Raymond Field. With the wins, Providence improved to 17-22 overall, including a 6-7 record in the BIG EAST. UConn is now 18-22 overall and 4-7 in league play.
In game one, the Friars rallied for a 3-1 victory. Jennifer Ward hit a solo home run in the third inning to give UConn a 1-0 lead. However, the Friars scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead for good. The Friars loaded the bases before Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) hit a single to drive in one run and two more runs scored following an error. PC freshman Corinne Clauss (Davie, Fla.) earned her sixth victory of the season as she pitched a complete game, allowed just one run on four hits and struck out four batters.
In game two, Providence scored four times in the first inning en route to a 6-0 triumph. Junior Justine Stratton (Fresno, Calif.) singled to drive in the first run of the game. Stratton then scored on a passed ball and senior Teresa Bertels (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) capped off the first inning with a two-run double as the Friars jumped out to a four-run lead. Stratton hit a double in the second inning to score another run and increase PC's lead to 5-0. The Friars completed the scoring in the fourth inning when senior Christy Becker (Atlanta, Ga.) singled to drive in sophomore Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.) who had doubled.
PC sophomore Alicia Grosso (Baldwin, N.Y.) earned the win as she pitched all seven innings, allowed no runs on five hits and struck out five batters as she improved to 7-4 on the season.
The Friars are back in action on Saturday, April 24 when they play a BIG EAST doubleheader at Rutgers beginning at noon.
