Men's Lacrosse Drops 17-3 Decision At UMass

AMHERST, MASS. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team was defeated by the University of Massachusetts, 17-3, on Tuesday, March 16 in Amherst, Mass. Junior midfielder Evan Helda (Charlotte, N.C.) scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season to pace the Friars. With the defeat, PC falls to 0-4, while Massachusetts improves to 4-2.

The Minutemen posted the first eight goals of the contest until junior midfielder Mike Feldberg (Voorhees, N.J.) scored for the Friars with 9:23 to play in the second quarter. Art Kell posted a goal for UMass four minutes later and the Minutemen took a 9-1 lead into halftime. With 10:28 to play in the third quarter, senior midfielder Jackson Fallon (Arlington, Mass.) rifled a shot pass UMass goaltender Tim McCormack to make the score 9-2 in favor of the Minutemen. The Friars scored their final goal to make it 15-3, as Helda recorded his score unassisted with 8:32 to play in the contest.

Sophomore goaltender Tim Finnegan (Lowell, Mass.) took the loss in goal for the Friars, allowing nine goals while making 10 saves in 30:00 minutes of action. Senior Frank Cicero (Venetia, Pa.), sophomore Christian Dzwilewski (Huntington, N.Y.) and junior Jake Goodelman (Wantagh, N.Y.) all saw time in the cage for the Friars in the second half. PC held a 15-5 edge in saves for the contest.

McCormack earned the victory for Massachusetts, making two saves while allowing two goals in 45:00 minutes of play. Kell paced the UMass offense with six points on five goals and an assist.

PC returns to action on Sunday, March 21 with a noon contest against No. 10/9 Georgetown at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The game is the Friars' 2010 home opener and the team's first BIG EAST Conference game in school history.
