EASTCHESTER, N.Y. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated Manhattan, 5-4, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match-up on Wednesday, April 25 in Eastchester, N.Y. Senior Bennett Murphy (Princeton, N.J.) led the Friars with three goals, while sophomore Bobby Labadini (Westford, Mass.) tallied what proved to be the game-winning goal with 2:33 left in the game.
Murphy started scoring for PC just 56-seconds into the game to give the Friars a 1-0 advantage off a feed from senior Mark Bundra (Winnetka, Ill.). The Jaspers responded with three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead. The last of the three goals came at the 10:45 mark in the second quarter as Brian Murray scored, unassisted. The score remained 3-1 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Murphy struck for back-to-back goals at 14:06 and 10:25. Both goals were assisted by Labadini, and the second goal came during a man-up opportunity and tied the score, 3-3. Bundra put the Friars ahead, 4-3, at the 5:08 mark of the third with an unassisted goal.
In the fourth quarter, Manhattan tied the game, 4-4, as Angelo Marrano netted an unassisted goal with 9:05 left in the game. Labadini followed with the game winner, unassisted, at 2:33.
Senior Peter Littell (Upper Montclair, N.J.) recorded 12 saves between the pipes for Providence. John Geagan made four saves in goal for Manhattan.
The Friars will return to action on Saturday, April 28 against MAAC foe Siena at 2:00 p.m. A Friar victory would assure Providence a spot in the MAAC Championship Tournament for the seventh-consecutive year.
