PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated Fairfield, 11-10, in overtime on Wednesday, April 5 at the Friar Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. Sophomore Devin McBride (Marblehead, Mass.) netted the game-winning goal for Providence with 56-seconds remaining in overtime off an assist from senior Tom Kelly (Henniker, N.H.).
Senior Michael Farley (Westfield, N.J.) and sophomore R.J. Lamontagne (Pittsford, N.Y.) each scored a team-high three goals to pace the Friar offense. Farley netted two of his three goals early in the first quarter, enroute to a 4-0 Friar lead after the first 15 minutes of play.
Fairfield stormed back in the second quarter with five unanswered goals to take a 5-4 lead at halftime. The Friars rallied in the third quarter and outscored the Stags, 4-2, to take an 8-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, Providence got unassisted goals from Lamontagne and Kelly at the 9:41 mark and 8:58 mark to give the Friars a 10-7 lead. The Stags rallied to score three unanswered goals in the quarter to tie the game and force overtime. Travis Nelson netted the first Fairfield goal in the fourth quarter, followed by back-to-back unassisted goals from Greg Downing with 5:33 and 4:24 showing on the clock.
Fairfield attempted two shots in the overtime after winning the opening face-off. The Friars gained possession and only needed one shot to win the game. McBride connected on the game winner with 56-seconds left in OT off a feed from Kelly. Graduate student Jonathan Hollister (Longmeadow, Mass.) managed to get the ball to Kelly after picking up a critical groundball behind the cage. McBride finished the night with two goals and one assist.
Kelly added one goal and one assist for the Friars. Also recording one goal each for PC was senior Mark Seyer (Kirkwood, Mo.) and junior Mark Bundra (Winnetka, Ill.). Junior Henry Pynchon (Ipswich, Mass.) tallied one assist on the night.
Fairfield was led offensively by Nelson and Downing, who recorded three goals apiece. Nelson added one assist to lead the Stags with four points. Four other Stags scored one goal in the game.
Peter Littell (Upper Monclair, N.J.) earned the victory for PC between the pipes. He made 13 saves in the game and improves to 3-2 overall, while the Friars improve to 3-3 on the season. Mike Kruger made seven saves for Fairfield in goal.
Providence (3-3) returns to action on Saturday, April 8 against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Siena. The game will be played at 3:00 p.m. in Loudonville, N.Y.
