Softball Defeats Harvard, 5-4, and Ties The Crimson, 0-0, In Home Opening Double Header

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team opened its home schedule with a double header against Harvard on Tuesday, March 30 at Raymond Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars defeated the Crimson, 5-4, in eight innings in the first game as sophomore Michelle Willette (Moorpark, Calif.) hit a two-run walk-off home run. In the second game, the two teams played to a 0-0 tie after seven innings, but the game was discontinued because of darkness.

In the first game, the Friars led, 3-2, going into the seventh inning, but the Crimson rallied to tie the game as Sara Williamson (Weatherford, Texas) hit a sacrifice fly to drive in pinch runner Lauren Brown (Winter Park, Fla.). Harvard took a 4-3 lead in the eighth inning when Annie Dell'Aria (Fairfax, Va.) drew a bases loaded walk. In the bottom half of the eighth inning, Willette provided the heroics for the Friars as she hit a two-run home run the left field to give the Friars the win. Classmate Elena Romero (Chula Vista, Calif.) also scored on the play as she had singled with one out. Willette, who also homered in the second inning, batted 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI. Freshman Shannon Garvin (Fresno, Calif.) hit a two-run double in the third inning to give PC a 3-1 lead, while senior Chrissy Iannolo (Syracuse, N.Y.) had three hits. For the Crimson, Virginia Fritsch (Los Gatos, Calif.) and Cecily Gordon (Los Gatos, Calif.) each had three hits and one RBI.

On the mound, freshman Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) was credited with the win as she pitched one inning, allowed one run on two hits and struck out two batters. Surosky relieved senior Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.), who pitched seven innings, allowed three runs and posted seven strikeouts. Harvard's Lauren Bettinelli (Brightwaters, N.Y.) pitched seven plus innings, allowed five runs and struck out four batters.

In the second game, pitching was dominant as the Friars and the Crimson played to a 0-0 tie. Providence's Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) pitched seven innings, allowed only one hit and struck out nine batters. Kara Brotemarkle (Clifton, Va.) also pitched all seven innings for Harvard and allowed two hits and posted six strikeouts. Romero and Karsnia each recorded one hit for the Friars, while Julia Kidder (Belmont, Mass.) had the Crimson's lone hit.
