PRESS CONFERENCE INTRODUCING SUSAN YOW AS THE HEAD COACH OF THE PROVIDENCE COLLEGE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM

June 21, 2002

Bob Driscoll, Athletic Director: "Good morning ladies and gentlemen, and I'd like to thank you for being here this morning. My name is Bob Driscoll and I'm the Athletic Director. I recall six months ago when I was appointed Athletic Director at Providence College that I made an opening statement that it was a great day to be a Friar. I'm happy to say that it's another great day to be a Friar because we have a woman here who I believe is going to help lead us to great success in what I believe is the toughest women's conference in the nation and that's the Big East Conference and her name is Susan Yow."

Rev. Terence Keegan, O.P., Executive Vice President : "We all know that we lost our women's basketball coach not too long ago and I'd like to thank the search committee that went right to work and did a terrific job of bringing in the best possible person for Providence College. That's what we asked them to do. To find the right person for Providence College who would be the right fit. I've meet with Susan and I am confident that she is absolutely the right person. I am delighted to have her joining us today and I want all of you to welcome her as I have welcomed her.

Bob Driscoll, Athletic Director: "Thank you Father Keegan. When we embarked on this search two and a half months ago, with Jill La Point and the search committee, I said to them that we were going to take our time. We are going to take our time because of how important this position is to the department and it was an important decision in terms of how serious we are in making a commitment to women's basketball. I think we've done that with the hiring of Susan Yow. When I was thinking about something I wanted in a coach, I wanted a head coach with coaching experience at the collegiate level so they knew what it was like to sit in that seat. I also wanted somebody who had a vision for the program. They knew what the potential for this institution really was. I wanted somebody who had the core values that we embrace in the athletic department, honesty, integrity, commitment to excellence. I know Sue has all those values as part of her personality as well. I wanted somebody that would really fit, who would be part of the Providence College family and I am confident that Sue is that person. She comes from a tremendous legacy of successful women in sports. Her sister, who we are proud to have here today, Kay Yow, is the long-standing head coach at North Carolina State. She has her sister Debbie Yow who is the Athletic Director at the University of Maryland and we know the kind of success that they've had there recently. Sue also has had her own success in all aspects of sports. She was an outstanding college basketball player. She was a Kodak All-American. She was a head coach at the early age of 24. If I'm not mistaken, she's been a head coach at the Division 1level for 19 years. In the past four years she's been an assistant in the WNBA. I'm just so proud and honored that she's now going to be part of our family. So will you to please give Sue a warm Friar welcome. Sue Yow."

Susan Yow, Head Coach: "It's a great day for me personally. It's a great day for our family and it's a thrill of mine to be here and its something that I've waited a long time for. I've been in the WNBA, as Bob had mentioned, and really desired to get back to the college level. Waiting for a place that would be the right fit for me personally as an individual. I had really been looking and praying a great deal about where I may end. Intently really looking at the situation of where could I be? When Bob made the first phone call I told him during the conversation that this was a dream call of mine. I had heard a great deal about him, as an individual that he was and here he had called me to say that he might be interested in me coming to Providence, looking at Providence College, and perhaps being the next Head Women's Basketball Coach. It was beyond anything I could imagine because the thing that I knew about Providence College was that it is a basketball school. It has tremendous tradition, in its basketball program, both men and women. The tradition is very strong in the women's game and I know that Helen Bert is in the room. Though I've never meet her, I have read about her and I know that she's started the one that started Women's Athletics here at Providence College. I know I'll be part of a great family, of Friars, that's exciting to me. I looked up the word Providence today and its meaning was divine guidance and another meaning would be God. I thought about the months, weeks and days that I prayed about where I would go and to help me make the right decisions. I am a blessed individual to be here today, to be a part of the history of Friar Women's Basketball. Thank you so much, I've felt so very welcomed here today."

QUESTIONS -

"Why did you come to Providence?"

Yow - "I was very impressed with Bob Driscoll and his leadership and his vision and his skills. Not just in terms of basketball, but what he wanted to do here. It just seemed to be a great, great fit under great leadership. That's all you can ask for as a coach, to be surrounded by people who want to support you."

"What style of play do you hope to have on the floor?"

Yow - "You might start out thinking that you want to do this, but once you get to know your team you find that they might be more successful doing something else. Basically, the intangibles are a team that is very hard working and fundamentally sound. If you are a spectator watching, I hope you would say that those women really care on that court. Also, it's a 30-second clock, so everyone plays up-tempo style. Everyone is going to need to play at a high rate of speed, under control. Defense will be important. Understanding roles and accepting roles is very important."

"Do you have any thoughts of coming into a conference with the reigning national champion and the national champion before that?"

Yow - "I try not to think about that. That's not our first order of business. I think it is very positive. UConn did not lose a game last season and they could beat anyone in any conference. They set a standard. It is something that I would love see happen here. They have set the bar very high."
