Providence Lacrosse Knocks Off Canisius

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence men's lacrosse team earned it's second-consecutive win of the season, as they knocked off Canisius College 12-10, Sunday afternoon at Glay Field. Two of the Friars three wins this season have come over unbeaten teams, and Canisius turned out to be one of the victims as it entered the contest with a 3-0 record (1-0 MAAC). The Griffins jumped out to an early 6-3 lead in the first quarter as Chris Tocin scored two of his three goals, and added an assist to lead Canisius. The Friars turned it up a notch in the second and third quarters and took a 9-8 advantage behind PC's Chris Houston (Garden City, N.Y.), who scored two of his game-high four goals in that span. Canisius was held to just two goals, one in each quarter.

With the Friars leading by a goal in the fourth (9-8), Tom McLoughlin (Yorktown, N.Y.) put Providence up 10-8 with 8:20 remaining in the game. The Griffs pulled back to within two goals at 6:01, as Mark Miyashita scored his third goal of the game. Houston capped off the offense for the Friars with 4:12 remaining, as Providence held Canisius to just one more goal by Tocin to secure the win.

Kyle Ojakian (Cheshire, Conn.) had another multiple assist game for Providence with five, and added one goal. Skip Dunphy (Manhasset, N.Y.) tallied three goals and two assists. David Kole (Montclair, N.J.), Jim Dooley (Maplewood, N.J.) and Ryan Phillips (Upper Montclair, N.J.) each scored one goal on the day. C.P. Kenny (Upper Montclair, N.J.), Kole and McLoughlin recorded one assist each.

In goal for Providence (3-5, 2-2 MAAC), John Farley (West Simsbury, Conn.) played all 60 minutes and registered 10 saves. Canisius (3-1, 1-1 MAAC) goaltender Seth Vath took in seven saves in 60 minutes of work.
