PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Sophomore track athlete Claire Shearman (Portsmouth, N.H.) has qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track Championship on May 31-June 3 at Duke University in Durham, N.C.
Shearman, who will be competing at her first NCAA Track Championship, will run the 5,000 meters on Friday, June 2 at 9:15 p.m. Shearman qualified for the 5,000 meters by running a time of 16:23.31 at the Penn Relays on April 28. She did not run the automatic qualifying time of 16:13, but she did finish under the provisional time of 16:48 for the 5,000 meters. Shearman's time of 16:23.31 is the 18th fastest time of the 20 women that qualified for the NCAA 5,000 meters.
Shearman has been one of the Friars' top runners this year. In October, she finished 15th and earned All-BIG EAST honors at the BIG EAST Cross Country Championship. Shearman ran her best race of the season at the NCAA Northeast Regional Cross Country Championship when she placed third (17:20) and helped the Friars earn a first-place finish. At the NCAA Cross Country Championship, Shearman was PC's third finisher (66th overall) in a time of 17:57.30.
Shearman is a 1998 graduate of the Governor Dummer School in Byfield, Mass.
