PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College men's lacrosse players
Ian Olenik (Windham, N.H.),
Rhett Chambers (Larchmont, N.Y.) and
Charlie Smith (Matthews, N.C.) earned BIG EAST Weekly Honors on Monday, April 13. Olenik was named Specialist of the Week. Chambers and Smith were named to the Weekly Honor Roll. The Friars overcame a four-goal deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat BIG EAST foe Villanova, 10-9, in overtime on Saturday, April 11, in Villanova, Pa.
Olenik recorded a career-high six ground balls and three caused turnovers in the Friars overtime win. The junior forced a caused a turnover in Villanova's final possession of regulation to keep the game tied and force overtime. In overtime, he picked up his sixth ground ball of the game to set up possession for the game-winning goal. Olenik currently leads the Friars defense with a team-high 20 caused turnovers and ranks second on the team in ground balls (36). He was previously named Specialist of the week on Feb. 9.
Chambers registered four points on three goals and one assist. The junior scored the game-tying and game-winning goals in the Friars overtime win at Villanova. He also scored three of the Friars final four goals to help overcome a four-goal deficit in the fourth quarter. It marked Chambers' sixth hat trick of the season. He currently leads Providence in points (53), goals (27) and assists (26). This marks the third time Chambers has been recognized on the league's weekly honor roll (3/9, 3/23). He was also named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on Feb. 9 and was a Preseason All-BIG EAST Team selection.
Smith recorded a career-best two caused turnovers in the team's overtime win this weekend. Smith forced a caused turnover in overtime that gave the Friars the offensive possession that the game-winning goal was scored on. The junior has tallied four caused turnovers and four ground balls in seven games this season.
WHAT'S NEXT... The Friars return to Providence, R.I. to host their annual senior day on Saturday, April 18 against BIG EAST foe Denver. Opening faceoff is set for 12:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
