Men's Lacrosse Defeats Merrimack In Non-Conference Action, 16-9

Richie Joseph scored his 100th career goal; Rhett Chambers recorded a career-high 10 points.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated Merrimack, 16-9, in non-conference action on Monday, March 2 in Providence, R.I. Senior Richie Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored his 100th career goal and junior Rhett Chambers (Larchmont, N.Y.) tallied a career-high 10 points to lead the Friars. Chambers recorded three goals and a career-best seven assists. Providence evened its record at 3-3, while Merrimack dropped to 1-5 on the season.


1st Quarter:

• Merrimack scored the first goal of the game just 1:10 into the action to claim a 1-0 lead (13:50).

• The Friars responded with a four-straight goals. Chambers got on the board first for the Friars. 

• Joseph followed with his 100th career goal and gave the Friars a 2-1 lead (6:46). 

• Chambers scored his second of the day and Chris Matia (Alexandria, Va.) capped the scoring run to give the Friars a 4-1 lead (3:27). 

• Merrimack scored back-to-back goals to close the quarter. The Warriors' second goal came with just one second remaining on the clock. 

• Providence led 4-3 at the intermission. Chambers paced the Friars in the opening 15 minutes with two goals and one assist.

2nd Quarter:

• Merrimack extended its goal-scoring run to four with two tallies to open the second quarter and claimed 5-4 lead (9:04). 

• Tyler Flynn (Setauket, N.Y.) halted the Warriors' run with his first goal of the season, and sixth of his career, to tie the game 5-5 with 4:46 on the clock.

• Flynn's goal sparked a 4-0 run to close the half. 

Chris Jaskiewicz (Winter Park, Fla.) scored at the 3:27 mark, followed by back-to-back goals from Brady Garcia (Baldwinsville, N.Y.). He scored both goals, unassisted, with 1:10 to play and with 11-seconds left.

• It marked Garcia's first goals of the season.

• Providence led 8-5 at halftime.

3rd Quarter:

• Providence broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring Merrimack, 5-1.

Luke Schmitt (Garden City, N.Y.) struck first for Providence at the 13:47 mark.

• Jack Salva scored Merrimack's lone goal of the quarter 59-seconds later to cut the Warriors' deficit to 9-6.

• Jaskiewicz, Garcia, Joseph and Chambers finished off the scoring for Providence in the third.

• Providence went into the intermission with a 13-6 lead.

4th Quarter

• Providence extended its goal scoring run to seven straight as it opened the fourth quarter with goals from Owen Finetto (Haworth, N.J.), Matt Lazzaro (Franklin, Mass.) and Stone Evans (Hartford, Conn.).

• The offensive flurry gave Providence a 10-goal lead (16-6) with 10:52 to play.

• Merrimack closed the game with three unanswered goals to make the final score 16-9.

Notes:

• Joseph became the eighth player in program history to record 100-career goals. He finished with two goals in the game and owns 101 for his career.

• Joseph ranks sixth all-time in career goals at Providence (101) and tied for 16th in career points (136).

• Chambers finished with a career-high 10 points on three goals and a career-best seven assists. He also recorded his third hat trick of the season.

• Through six games, Chambers leads the Friars in points (32), goals (14) and assists (18).

• Garcia recorded his first career hat trick having finished the day with three goals – marking the first goals of his career at Providence.

• Jaskiewicz recorded the first multi-goal game of his career with two goals vs. Merrimack. 

• Lazzaro finished the day with three points on one goal and two assists. He has scored at least one goal in every game for the Friars this season.

Chris Esposito (Gloucester, Mass.) won 12 of 18 face-off opportunities for the Friars. Esposito also led the Friars in groundballs, with six.

• The face-off unit finished with a combined 14 victories in 28 opportunities. 

Cam Sterritt got the win for Providence in between the pipes. He played 54 minutes and recorded eight saves and gave up six goals. 

WHAT'S NEXT... Providence College return to action on Saturday, March 7 against Loyola (Md.). The game will be played in Baltimore, Md. and is scheduled to begin at Noon.
