Men’s Lacrosse Falls To Loyola Maryland, 15-9

Richie Joseph scored a hat trick for the Friars.

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team was defeated by Loyola University Maryland (4-2), 15-9, on Saturday, March 7 in Baltimore, Md. Providence moved to 3-4 on the season. Richie Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored a hat trick for the Friars. Jack Bonello (Great Falls, Va.) scored his first career goal and tallied a career-high three points for Providence.
1st Quarter:
• The Friars got on the board first as Ian Olenik (Windham, N.H.) scored off the opening faceoff to give Providence a 1-0 lead just 15 seconds into the game (14:45).
• Loyola responded with three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead (5:13).
• Bonello ended Loyola's run with a man-up goal as the Friars closed the gap to one. The goal marked the freshman's first career goal.
• Joseph tied the game at three with his first goal of the game on a feed from Bonello (1:15).
2nd Quarter:
• The Greyhounds opened the second quarter with back-to-back goals and took a 5-3 lead (13:32).
• The Friars responded with two goals to tie the game at five. Jay Wilkerson (Baltimore, Md.) scored the first, and Joseph found the back of the net for the equalizer (6:49).
• Loyola responded with two more goals of its own. Matthew Minicus scored his third goal of the first half as the Greyhounds took a 7-5 lead into the break (1:51).
• Loyola outshot Providence, 23-19, in the first half.
 
3rd Quarter:
• Loyola got on the board first in the second half and extended its lead to 8-5 (12:58).
• Matt Lazzaro (Franklin, Mass.) found the back of the net on a man-up opportunity for his first goal of the game. Joseph followed minutes later with his third goal of the day to trim the Greyhounds' lead to 8-7 (9:36).
• The teams continued to trade goals as Loyola scored to extend its lead to 9-7 (3:46).
 
4th Quarter
• The Greyhounds carried momentum into the final quarter with back-to-back goals that extended the lead to 11-7 (13:02).
• Wilkerson scored his second goal of the game as the Friars trailed 11-8 (12:12).
• The teams traded goals as Loyola scored for the 12th time, followed by a Providence goal by Chris Matia (Alexandria, Va.). Loyola held a 12-9 lead (9:09).
• Loyola scored three straight goals and took its largest lead of the game at 15-9 (1:43).
• The Greyhounds outscored the Friars, 6-2, in the final quarter.
 
Notes:
• Joseph scored a team-high three goals for Providence. It marked his second hat trick of the season.
• Joseph is currently 16th on the Friars' all-time scoring list and tied for fifth on the all-time goals list. The senior owns 139 points on 104 goals and 35 assists in his career.
• Bonello tallied a career-best three points on one goal and two assists. The freshman registered his first career goal and assist in the game.
• Olenik continued his production on defense with two caused turnovers and two ground balls. He has registered a team-high 14 caused turnovers this season. The long-stick midfielder also scored his second goal of the season for the Friars.  
• Wilkerson scored two goals in his return to his hometown of Baltimore, Md.
• Matthew Minicus scored a game-high four goals for Loyola, while Will Musgrove tallied a game-high five points on two goals and three assists for the Greyhounds.
• Max Watkinson made nine saves on a .625 save percentage in goal for Loyola.
• Both teams tallied 42 shots and 24 shots on goal.
• Loyola held the advantage in caused turnovers by a margin of 7-4.
• The Greyhounds won 15 of 26 faceoff opportunities.
• Providence was outscored, 8-4, in the second half.
 
WHAT'S NEXT... Providence College will travel to Farmingdale, N.Y. to face No. 4 Duke on Saturday, March 14 at 1:00 p.m. The game will be played at Howitt Middle School on Long Island.
