Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Holy Cross In Season Opener, 15-10

Three Friars recorded hat tricks in the win.

Worcester, Mass. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated Holy Cross, 15-10, on Saturday, Jan. 31 in Worcester, Mass.  With the win, the Friars improved to 1-0 on the season, while Holy Cross started the year 0-1. Junior Rhett Chambers (Larchmont, N.Y.) led the offense with a career-high six points on four goals and two assists. His four goals also marked a career high. Junior transfer Matt Lazzaro (Franklin, Mass.) recorded career highs in points (five), goals (three) and assists (two). Sophomore Jay Wilkerson (Baltimore, Md.) tallied a career-high four goals for the Friars
1st Quarter:
Rhett Chambers (Larchmont, N.Y.) opened the scoring action with an early goal that gave the Friars a 1-0 lead (13:54).
• Holy Cross evened the game on the next possession, but Jay Wilkerson (Baltimore, Md.) responded to help the Friars reclaim the lead, 2-1 (11:45).
• The Crusaders found a rhythm on offense as they scored back-to-back goals and took a 3-2 lead (6:44).
• Two minutes later, Richie Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass.) delivered a goal to tie the game at three. Holy Cross continued to find answers as they took back a one goal lead at 4-3 (4:22).  
• Sam Brazell (DeWitt, N.Y.) scored for the Friars to tie the game, 4-4. Holy Cross scored another goal soon after to regain the lead with 90 seconds left in the quarter. 
• With under a minute left, Matt Lazzaro scored his first career goal to tie the game, 5-5, at the break.
2nd Quarter:
• Wilkerson and Chambers scored back-to-back goals to open the second period as the Friars took a 7-5 lead (14:06).
• Holy Cross cut the deficit to one, but Chambers netted his third goal of the game that gave the Friars a 8-6 lead.
• The Crusaders closed the first half with back-to-back goals to tie the game heading into halftime, 8-8.
 
3rd Quarter:
• Providence broke the game open with four unanswered goals in the third quarter.
• Lazzaro opened the second half with a goal as the Friars took a 9-8 lead to begin the second half (13:03).
• Wilkerson and Joseph each scored goals as the Friars an 11-8 lead (7:08).
• Lazzaro found the back of the net for his third goal with eight seconds left in the quarter.
• Goalkeeper Cam Sterritt (Brampton, Ont.) and the Friars defense held Holy Cross scoreless in the third quarter as they held a 12-8 lead.
 
4th Quarter
• Providence scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to extend its goal-scoring streak to six.
• With just over six minutes remaining in the game, Wilkerson found the back of the net for the fourth time and gave the Friars a 13-8 lead (6:02).
• Cooper Anderson (Minneapolis, Minn.) scored his first career goal and extended the Friars lead (4:55).
• Holy Cross scored to narrow the Friars lead to 14-9.
• Chambers scored his fourth goal of the game and gave Providence a 15-9 lead (2:27).
• Holy Cross scored with under a minute left in the game, but the Friars held a 15-10 lead at the final horn.
• Both of the Crusaders' goals in the quarter came during man-up situations. 
 
Notes:
• Lazzaro recorded career highs in points (five) points, goals (three) and assists (two).
• Chambers registered a career-best six points on a career-high four goals and two assists.
• Wilkerson scored a career-high four goals for the Friars.
• Jospeh added two goals for the Friars. The senior has 124 career points (92 goals / 32 assists) and ranks 17th on the program all-time scoring list. He also ranks ninth at Providence in career goals.
Chris Esposito (Gloucester, Mass.) registered a 14-22 mark from the faceoff 'X'. Providence won 18 of 29 face-off opportunities overall.
• Sterritt recorded 15 saves with a .600 save percentage in his collegiate debut.
• Three Friars registered three goals or more in the game.
• The Friars outscored the Crusaders 7-2 in the second half, including a 4-0 advantage in the third quarter.
• The Friars outshot Holy Cross 50-35.
• The Friars recorded eight caused turnovers to Holy Cross' five.
 
 
WHAT'S NEXT... The Friars will return to Providence for their home opener versus Bryant on Saturday, Feb. 7. Faceoff is set for 12:00 p.m. on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. The game will be streamed on Friars Live via Friars.com.
