Volleyball Defeats University of New Haven, 3-0

The Friars will return to action this weekend (Sept. 12-13) at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I., to host the 20th Annual Friar Classic.


PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College volleyball team (4-3) defeated University of New Haven (1-4) in straight sets (3-0) on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at Alumni Hall in Providence.

FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence earned a 25-22 victory in the first set.
  • Providence came out quick with a 10-6 lead.
  • A kill by junior Lyric Berry (Wylie, Texas) extended the Providence lead to 17-10.
  • New Haven narrowed the gap to 20-17, forcing a Providence timeout.
  • The Friars maintained their lead to win the set 25-22.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence won the second set, 25-18.
  • The Friars came out strong with a 10-4 lead.
  • An ace by junior Miller McDonald (Dallas, Texas) extended PC's lead to 13-5, forcing a New Haven timeout.
  • Providence extended its lead to 20-10 with a kill by freshman Tori Otter (Rogers, Ark.).
  • Berry had a block to close out the set, 25-18.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence won the set 25-16 and the match 3-0.
  • Providence jumped out to a 10-4 advantage.
  • A kill by sophomore Sophia Adkins (Cincinnati, Ohio) extended the Friars' lead to 15-7, forcing a Charger timeout.
  • New Haven narrowed the gap to 19-14, forcing a Providence timeout.
  • Providence maintained its lead to win the set 25-16, and the match 3-0.
MATCH NOTES:
  • Berry and Adkins both led the team in kills (nine) and blocks (four).
  • Redshirt senior Hadley Pride (Nashville, Tenn.) led the defense with 20 digs.
  • The Friars notched 36 kills, 11 aces, nine blocks and 54 digs.

WHAT'S NEXT: The Providence College volleyball team will host the 20th Annual Friar Classic this weekend at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The Friars open play against Central Connecticut State University on Friday, Sept. 12 at 5:00 p.m. They will then face Merrimack College on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 2:00 p.m. and Holy Cross at 7:00 p.m.
