Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Loyola (Md.), 12-11

The Friar offense was paced by Ryan Bell who recorded five points on three goals and two assists.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.–The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated Loyola (Md.), 12-11, on Saturday, March 8 in Providence R.I. The Friars improved to 4-3 on the season. Ryan Bell (Smithtown, N.Y.) paced the Friars with five points on three goals and two assists. Jack Horrigan (Lutherville, N.Y.) also added three goals for the Friars.  
 
 
1st Quarter: 
Rhett Chambers (Larchmont, N.Y.) opened the scoring for the Friars, netting a goal at 13:21 to give them a 1-0 lead.  
• Loyola responded with a goal to tie the game at 1-1 with 8:35 remaining in the quarter. 
Richie Joseph (Longmeadow, Mass.) delivered a goal that put the Friars back on top, 2-1 (6:56).  
• Loyola found the back of the net on a man-up opportunity to tie the game. The Greyhounds added another goal and took a 3-2 lead with 11:38 remaining in the first quarter.  
• Loyola outshot the Friars 9-8 in the first quarter.  
• Loyola recorded three faceoff wins to the Friars two.  
• Each team recorded seven groundballs in the first quarter of action.  
 
2nd Quarter: 
• Joseph scored his second goal of the day for the Friars, tying the game at 3-3 at 8:55. 
• Loyola scored back-to-back goals and gained their largest lead of the day at 5-3 with 2:49 remaining in the first half.  
• Horrigan scored for the Friars, cutting the Greyhounds' lead to 5-4 with 1:24 remaining in the first half. The goal, assisted by Bell, marked Bell's 200th career point. 
• The Friars outshot the Greyhounds 12-8 in the second quarter and 20-17 in the first half.  
• The Friars recorded 15 groundballs to the Greyhounds 11 in the half.  
• The two teams each went 5-10 from the faceoff 'X' in the first half.  
Dan Donahue (Weston, Mass.) recorded five saves and a .500 save percentage in the first half.  
 
 
3rd Quarter: 
Jay Wilkerson (Baltimore, Md.) opened the second half with a goal for the Friars that beat the shot clock, tying the game at 5-5 at 11:28. 
• Bell added a goal of his own which gave the Friars a 6-5 lead with 9:16 remaining in the third quarter.  
• Loyola answered with back-to-back goals, regaining a 7-6 lead with 7:52 remaining in the third quarter. 
Sam Brazell (DeWitt, N.Y.) and Bell scored back-to-back goals for the Friars, giving them an 8-7 lead with 4:16 remaining in the third quarter. 
• The scoring continued as the Greyhounds tied the game at 8-8 with a man-up goal at 3:29. 
• The Friars outshot the Greyhounds 12-9 in the third quarter.  
• Each team recorded six groundballs in the third quarter.  
• Loyola held a faceoff win advantage of 4-3 over the Friars from the 'X' in the third quarter. 
  
4th Quarter 
• Horrigan broke the tie with a quick goal at the start of the fourth quarter that gave the Friars a 9-8 advantage (14:42).  
• Loyola responded with their own goal to tie the game at 9-9 with 12:49 remaining in the fourth quarter.  
• The Friars respond with three goals from Wilkerson, Horrigan, and Bell to give the Friars a 12-9 lead at 5:02.  
• The Greyhounds responded with back-to-back goal at 1:01 to narrow the Friars lead to 12-11.  
 
Notes: 
• Bell recorded five points on three goal and two assists. The Friars' all-time leading scorer owns 204 career points, becoming the first player in program history to reach 200 points. 
• Bell is also the program's all-time assist leader (145 assists). 
• Horrigan recorded three goals for the Friars and is now tied for ninth all-time in career goals at Providence with 90.  
• Horrigan recorded three points, moving him onto the Friars' all-time scoring list. He is tied for 22nd with 110 career points.  
Richie Joseph recorded three points on two goals and one assist. He is ranked 19th all-time in career goals at Providence with 72.  
• Wilkerson recorded a career high three points on two goals and one assist.  
• Four Friars recorded multi-goal game.  
Gregg Dennison (Acton, Mass.) notched five groundballs and three caused turnovers.  
• Loyola's goalie Watkinson recorded 12 saves and a .500 save percentage.  
• Donahue recorded 9 saves and a .450 save percentage.  
• The Friars went 16-18 from the faceoff "X". 
 
 
WHAT'S NEXT...The Friars will travel to No. 8/9 Duke on Wednesday, March 12. Faceoff is set for 7:00 p.m. in Durham, N.C.
