Orlando, Fla.– The Providence College men's and women's track and field teams opened the 2024 outdoor season at the University of Central Florida Invitational on Friday, March 15 at the UCF Soccer Complex in Orlando, Fla. Providence secured four first-place finishes.
The Friar men claimed the top-three spots in the 5,000 meters.
Abdel Laadjel (Lucan Ireland) finished first in 13:46.37, setting a facility record.
Shane Coffey (Naas, Ireland) placed second in 14:29.18 and
Michael Morgan (Sligo, Ireland) finished third in a time of 14:38.13.
Grady Satterfield (Bowdoinham, Maine) followed in fifth (15:13.99).
Patrick Thygesen (Brisbane, Australia) won the 2,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 5:35.30, setting a facility record.
In the 1,500 meters,
Liam Back (New Plymouth, New Zealand) led with a time of 3:45.72 to finish first.
Zane Powell (Auckland, New Zealand) finished in 3:50.11 and
Luke Coffin (Annapolis, Md.) followed in 3:56.51, marking a personal record.
Will Rainey (San Jose, Calif.) ran a 57.57 in the 400-meter hurdles and
Brett Lehman (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) set a personal record of 21.91 in the 200 meters.
On the women's side,
Laura Mooney (Cappincur, Ireland) won the 5,000 meters in a time of 16:22.86.
Cara Laverty (Derry, Ireland) led the Friar women in the 1,500 meters with a personal record time of 4:21.46. Following Laverty was
Tessa Hunt (Wellington, New Zealand) in 4:26.37,
Lilly Tuck (Sunderland, Canada) in 4:27.01 and
Claire Kelly (Cornwall on Hudson, N.Y.) in 4:35.21, all of whom set personal records.
In the 200 meters,
Jill Fenerty (Franklin, Mass.) ran a personal record of 25.26 and
Charlotte Cousins (Madbury, N.H.) finished in 26.73.
The Friars are back in action tomorrow [March 16],for the second day of the UCF Invitational.
