WORCESTER, MASS. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated Holy Cross, 12-6, in their season opener on Sunday, February 4 in Worcester, Mass.
Ryan Bell paced the way for the Friars' offense with seven points, scoring five goals and adding two assists.
1st Quarter:
- Ryan Bell put the Friars on the board less than two minutes into the game on an unassisted goal.
- Jack Horrigan scored two goals in under thirty seconds to make it 3-0 at the 9:51 mark.
- Bell scores his second of the quarter to extend the lead to 4-0.
- Freshman, Rhett Chambers, scored his first career goal as a Friar to extend their lead to 5-0.
- Bell scored his third goal of the quarter, making it 6-0.
- The Crusaders scored their first goal of the game at 4:43 mark.
- Horrigan scored with 9 seconds left in the quarter to give the Friars a 7-1 lead heading into the second.
2nd Quarter:
- Rhett Chambers connected with Bell to earn his first assist as a Friar to extend their lead to 8-1.
- Holy Cross responded with their second goal of the game at the 11:49 mark.
- Bell scored his fifth goal of the game off an assist from Horrigan.
- Horrigan extended their lead to 10-2 with his fourth goal of the game off a feed from Bell.
- The Crusaders scored with 43 seconds left in the half to make it 10-3.
- James Corasaniti had nine saves going into the half.
- Quinn McConnaughey was 13-15 at the faceoff at the end of the second.
3rd Quarter:
- Rich Joseph scored his first goal of the game and of the second half to extend Providence's lead to 11-3.
- Holy Cross answered with a goal at the 11:31 mark.
- Graduate student, Luke Jaber, scored his first goal as a Friar making it 12-4.
- The Crusaders scored after a Friars penalty, making it 12-5 going into the final quarter.
4th Quarter
- The Friars controlled the pace of play for the majority of the fourth quarter.
- No goals were scored the first seven minutes of the quarter, before Holy Cross scored with 7:53 left in the game.
- Providence closed out the game, winning 12-6.
