Women’s Hockey To Face Boston College In Home-And-Home Series

The Friars are currently 10-14-1 and 9-8-1 in Hockey East play

PROVIDENCE, R.I.–The Providence College women's hockey team will host Boston College at Schneider Arena on Friday, Jan. 26 for a 6:00 p.m. puck drop before traveling to Chestnut Hill, Mass. for a 2:00 p.m. start on Saturday, Jan. 27.

Scouting the Friars

The Friars are currently 10-14-1 and 9-8-1 in Hockey East play. Last weekend, the Friars swept Holy Cross in a home-and-home series. On Friday, Jan. 19, Providence claimed a 3-1 win over the Crusaders. The Friars then pulled a 5-2 win on Saturday, Jan. 20.

Hope Walinski (Lincoln, R.I.) finished the weekend with 35 saves. Lindsay Bochna (Toronto, Ontario) led the team with three recorded points over two games. Bochna recorded a goal on Friday, followed by a goal and an assist on Saturday.

The Friars have recorded four-straight wins, marking their longest winning streak of the season. Providence has posted a 5-1-1 record in its last seven Hockey East games to improve to 9-8-1 in league action.

Hockey East Preseason Poll

The Friars were picked to finish third in the Hockey East Preseason Poll, which was released on Tuesday, Sept. 12. The Friars, who received 74 points, were picked to finish behind Northeastern (88) and Vermont (75). The Huskies, who won the 2023 Hockey East Tournament, received eight first place votes.

Rounding out the poll was UConn (65), Boston University (59), Boston College (58), Maine (38), New Hampshire (35), Merrimack (28) and Holy Cross (20).

Fresh Friar Faces

Providence welcomes nine new players (two transfers and six freshmen) to the roster for the 2023-24 season. Grace Shirley (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) is a graduate student from University of Wisconsin and Hannah Johnson (Readfield, Maine) a junior from Syracuse University. The six freshmen are Audrey Knapp (Stevens Point, Wis.), Kiara Kraft (Churchville, N.Y.), Peyton Blaney (Millgrove, Ontario), Dylan Berman (Deephaven, Minn.), Taylor Gilmour (Napanee, Ontario), Taya Currie (Parkhill, Ontario) and Avery Callison (Acton, Mass).

Captains Named

Graduate student Lauren DeBlois (Lewiston, Maine) and senior Rachel Weiss (Calgary, Alberta) were named captains for the 2023-24 season, along with alternate captains Lindsay Bochna (Toronto, Ontario) and Lily Hendrikson (Edina, Minn.).

Hockey East Award Winners

Audrey Knapp was named Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week as announced on Oct. 23 for scoring three goals in two games.

Knapp earned Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week on Nov. 27 for scoring the lone goal and game-winner against Brown University.

Reichen Kirchmair (Oakville, Ontario) earned Hockey East Co-Player of the Week on Dec. 11 for recording four points on Dec. 8 against New Hampshire and scoring the Friars' lone goal against Boston University on Dec. 9.

Brooke Becker (Orchard Park, N.Y.) earned Hockey East Player of the Week on. Jan. 15 for recording two goals on Saturday, Jan. 13. Becker's second goal on Saturday sent Providence into overtime against Vermont, where they went on to win 4-3.

Scouting the Eagles

Boston College enters the weekend matchup at 13-7-5 (12-3-3 HEAW). The Eagles' last matchup was against Harvard on Tuesday, Jan. 23 in the women's Beanpot. The mid-week game ended in a tie (2-2) with Harvard winning the shootout, 1-0. On Friday, Jan. 19, Boston College defeated Merrimack, 6-4. 

Who to Watch

Sammy Taber leads the Eagles with 28 points consisting of 10 goals and 18 assists. Sammy Smigliani follows with nine goals and 14 assists for 23 points.

Goaltender Grace Campbell has started between the pipes in 25 games. Campbell has recorded 696 saves this season for a .922 save percentage and a 2.44 GAA.

All-Time Series with the Eagles

Providence currently leads the all-time series record against Boston College 57-45-3. The Friars last faced Boston Collge earlier this season on Dec. 1, 2023. Providence lost to the Eagles 5-1.
