Providence Men's Lacrosse Falls To No. 14 North Carolina

The Friars kick off BIG EAST play next Saturday at Anderson Stadium.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Providence College men's lacrosse team fell to No. 14 North Carolina, 25-8, on Saturday, Mar. 25 in Chapel Hill, NC. The Friars dropped to 4-5 overall in the 2023 season while the Tar Heels improved to 7-3.

1st Quarter:
  • North Carolina scored six goals early in the first quarter.
  • Patrick McAleavey put the Friars on board at the 5:40 mark, assisted by Ryan Bell.
  • Richie Joseph followed with a man-up goal at the 1:09 mark. Chris Simonton was credited with the assist for his first career-point.
  • North Carolina closed the quarter with a 9-2 lead.
  • North Carolina outshot Providence 18-8 and led in groundballs (17-8). Faceoffs were even at six wins apiece.

2nd Quarter:
  • North Carolina continued its momentum into the second quarter, scoring two goals out of the gate.
  • Dean Metzger netted the Friars' first goal of the frame off a feed from Albert Paniccia at the 9:25 mark. It was Paniccia's first career-assist.
  • The Tar Heels limited Providence to just three shots in the quarter, and UNC went into halftime with a 31-19 advantage in shot attempts overall.
  • North Carolina held a 6-1 scoring advantage in the second quarter and led 15-3 at the half.
 
3rd Quarter:
  • The Tar Heels outscored Providence 8-1 in the third quarter.
  • The Tar Heels scored four goals in the first five minutes, bringing the lead to 19-3.
  • Joseph followed with his second man-up goal of the day at the 9:51 mark off an assist from Jack Horrigan.
  • The Friars won 6-10 faceoffs, while the Tar Heels outshot Providence 11-4.
  • North Carolina entered the final quarter with a 23-4 lead.
 
4th Quarter:
  • Simonton scored his first career-goal at the 14:27 mark to open the fourth quarter.
  • Providence struck again with a man-up goal from Horrigan, assisted by McAleavey, at the 13:59 mark.
  • Ty Thureson netted his first goal of the day at the 7:44 mark, unassisted.
  • Tyler Flynn scored immediately off the faceoff victory from Tom Fegley with 6:53 remaining, and was assisted by Brendan Driscoll.
  • The Friars won 5-6 faceoffs in the fourth quarter and outscored UNC 4-2.
  • Providence picked up seven groundballs and had six shots on goal.
  • The Tar Heels recorded 25-8 victory over the Friars.

Notes:
  • Joseph led the Friars with two goals.
  • Simonton scored his first career-points on a goal and an assist.
  • Paniccia tallied his first career-assist.
  • Overall, North Carolina outshot Providence 46-32, and led the Friars in groundballs (38-35).
  • The Friars won (20-16) faceoffs against the Tar Heels.
 
WHAT'S NEXT… The Friars will begin BIG EAST play as they welcome Marquette University to Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium on Saturday, Apr. 1. Opening face-off is set for 12:00 p.m.
