NORFOLK, VA. – The Providence College field hockey team fell to BIG EAST member and 14
th-ranked Old Dominion on Friday, Oct. 14 in Norfolk, Va. (7-0). The Friars dropped to 5-9 on the season (2-3 BIG EAST), including six losses to nationally ranked teams. ODU improved 10-2 overall (4-1 BIG EAST).
1ST QUARTER:
• The Friars generated three offensive penalty corners and three shot attempts in the first two minutes of play, forcing Cam MacGillivray to make two early saves or ODU.
• ODU recorded back-to-back corners at 6:36 and 6:48, resulting in its first two shot attempts of the game, but
Asia Porter (Somerset, Mass.) stifled both opportunities toward the cage.
• The game was scoreless through the first quarter (0-0).
• ODU held a 4-3 edge in shot attempts in the opening 15 minutes, with shots on goal even at two apiece. The Friars recorded a 3-2 advantage in corners.
2ND QUARTER:
• Sacha De Gier gave ODU a 1-0 lead just 33-seconds into the second quarter and she collected a rebound off an initial shot and lifted the ball over the outstretched pads of Porter.
• Evelyn Murray put the Monarchs ahead, 2-0, on a penalty corner at 23:32. She was assisted by Frederique Zandbergen.
• At halftime, ODU led in shots (8-3), shots on goal (6-2) and corners (4-3).
3RD QUARTER:
• The Monarchs jumped on another rebound off Porter's pads just 1:07 into the third quarter and De Gier came up with her second goal of the afternoon (3-0).
• Delphine Le Jeune found the back of the cage for the Monarch's fourth goal of the afternoon and third penalty corner goal at 33:25. Marlon De Bruijne was credited with the assist.
• De Bruijne forced a turnover as Providence was attempting to clear the ball out of ODU's offensive circle. Upon gaining control of the ball, she fired a hard shot by Porter to give the Monarchs a 5-0 lead.
4TH QUARTER:
• Zandbergen added another penalty corner goal at 51:54 and Aubrey Mytych sent home a feed from Murray at 53:18 to take a 7-0 lead.
NOTES:
• Porter made 10 saves for Providence in goal, while ODU's MacGillivray collected two saves.
• ODU finished the game with a 22-4 advantage in shots and 9-3 advantage in corners.
• The Friars dropped to 5-9 on the season, with six of their eight losses coming at the hands of nationally ranked teams.
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will remain in Virginia to face non-conference opponent VCU on Sunday, Oct. 16 in Richmond, Va. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
