Sandra Abstreiter Named to the German National Team Final Roster

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence College graduate student Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) was named to the final German National Team roster for the 2021 IIHF Women's World Championship. The 24-player squad was announced today (Aug. 10) by German Ice Hockey Federation (Deutscher Eishockey-Bund).
 
This past season Abstreiter made 21 starts in net, leading the Friars to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2005. The netminder held a .929 save percentage and a 2.05 goals against average with four shutouts. Abstreiter tallied a career high 526 saves and registered a career high 41 saves in her final two games against No. 2 Northeastern in the Hockey East Championship Game (March 6) and No. 1 Wisconsin in the NCAA Tournament (March 16). She was named to the Hockey East All-Star Third Team and earned WHCA National Goaltender of the Month (January) and Hockey East Goaltender of the Month (November and December). Abstreiter was also recognized with the program's Defensive Player of the Year Award and was awarded the athletic department's Female Athlete of the Year Award.
 
The 2021 IIHF World Championship will take place in Calgary, Alberta, from August 20, 2021 through August 31, 2021. Originally, the tournament was set for Halifax and Truro, Nova Scotia from May 6-16, 2021. On April 21, the IIHF and Hockey Canada postponed the tournament due to safety concerns associated with COVID-19.
