Men’s Lacrosse Falls To Denver, 14-5, In BIG EAST Semifinals

Providence concludes its season with a 4-9 record.

Providence, R.I.- The fourth-seeded Providence College men's lacrosse team fell to the top-seeded Denver Pioneers, 14-5, in the BIG EAST Semifinals on May 6 at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I. The Friars conclude their season with a 4-9 record. Denver improves to 12-3 overall and will face the winner of Georgetown/Villanova in the BIG EAST Championship on May 8.
 
First Quarter:
-Denver scored all five goals in the quarter and led, 5-0, after the first quarter.
-RJ Romeo (Wilton, Conn.) went 4-6 at face-offs.
-Toby Burgdorf (Westfield, N.J.) had four saves.
 
Second Quarter:
-Denver scored the first two goals of the second quarter to push its lead to seven (7-0).
-Dan Axelson (Cohasset, Mass.) found Nick Shaw (Canton, Mass.) to put the Friars on the board with 3:21 left in the half (7-1).
-Denver's Sam Dwinell scored to push the Pioneers' lead back to seven (8-1).
-The Pioneers led, 8-1, at half.
 
Third Quarter:
-Denver's AJ Mercurio scored the first goal of the second half with 14:02 left in the quarter (9-1).
-Tim Hinrichs (Amherst, N.H.) split two defenders and scored for the Friars' second goal of the game (9-2).
-Denver's Alex Simmons tallied a goal for the Pioneers to push their lead back to eight (10-2).
-Matt Grillo (Setauket, N.Y.) scored his first goal of the evening with 3:17 left to play in the quarter (10-3).
-Ryan Nawrocki (Smithtown, N.Y.) found Axelson late in the shot clock for a goal. Denver led, 10-4.
-Denver's Jackson Morrill scored the final goal of the quarter with 47 seconds left (11-4).
-Denver led, 11-4 at the end of three quarters.
 
Fourth Quarter:
-The Pioneers scored three straight goals to push their lead to 10 (14-4).
-Grillo tallied his second goal of the game with 3:58 remaining in the quarter (14-5).
-Denver won, 14-5.
 
Game Notes:
-Nawrocki finishes his Friar career with 116 points on 60 assists and 56 goals. Nawrocki ranks tied for 11th all-time in assists and 17th all-time in career points in Providence College men's lacrosse history.
-Grillo (two goals) and Axelson (one goal, one assist) led the Friars with two points apiece.
-Burgdorf tallied 14 saves.
-Romeo went 10-22 from the 'X'.
