Wheeler’s 5,000-meter time (15:50) ranks top-10 in the nation.
New Orleans, La.- The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced today [Mar. 6] that Providence College's Abbey Wheeler (Elmira, N.Y.) was named the USTFCCCA Northeast Region Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Year for the 2020 indoor track and field season. This is the second consecutive year Wheeler has earned the honor. The regional award is determined by a vote of USTFCCCA member coaches.
Wheeler is seeded eighth in the 5,000-meter in the upcoming NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas on March 11-13. Wheeler's 5,000-meter time (15:50) ranks top-10 in the nation. Wheeler's 15:50 came at the JDL Camel City Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C., where she won the 5,000-meter.
Wheeler is a two time All-American (2018 Outdoor 5,000-meter, 2019 Outdoor 5,000-meter), a two time BIG EAST Champion (2020 Indoor 3,000-meter, 2020 Indoor 5,000-meter) and a two time ECAC Champion (2018 Indoor 3,000-meter, 2020 Cross Country).
