PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The Providence College volleyball team is set to host the Bryant University Bulldogs for their home opener Sunday, February 14, at 1:00 p.m. The match will be played at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I.
SCOUTING THE FRIARS:
The Friars posted a 6-25 overall record and a 1-17 mark in the BIG EAST conference for the 2019 season.
Leading the Friars' attack is sophomore outside hitter
Jennifer Leitman. Leitman averaged 3.33 points per set and 2.78 kills per set. She was named to the All-BIG EAST Freshman Team at the conclusion of the 2019 season and ranked in the top-12 in the BIG EAST for points per set, kills per set and services aces per set. Leitman was named to the 2020-21 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.
Senior
Allison Barber finished sixth in assists per set (7.98) and 12th in service aces per set (0.28) in the BIG EAST Conference. Barber also led the Friar defense with 321 digs during the season. Barber surpassed 3,000 career assists on Nov. 9 against Villanova, finishing the season ranked fifth all-time in Friar volleyball history in assists (3,096).
Junior
Mackenzie Taylor also returns, having ranked second in digs (290) and digs per set (2.87) on the team, and recorded double-digit digs in 15 matches.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS:
Bryant finished the 2019 season 15-17 overall record and a 10-6 mark in their conference.
Sophomore Riley James, a top scorer for the Bulldogs 2019 season, returns this year. James led the team in points (340), kills per set (2.70) and ranked second in digs per set (2.87). Erika Ward also returns this season, having led the Bulldog's in digs last year (379) averaging 3.68 per set. Bryant lost their top assist earner last season, but return sophomore Mia Cergol, who was second on the team in assists (464) and assists per set (4.11).
Bryant defeated Providence College during their last match in four sets (13-25, 21-25, 25-23, 21-25) on Sept. 10 2019.
