PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team opened the 2020-21 campaign with a 3-1 victory over Bryant University on Sunday, Feb. 14 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I.
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS:
-The Bulldogs held the lead for the majority of the set en route to a 25-20 win.
-The set was tied twice and featured two lead changes.
-Jennifer Leitman (Irvine, Calif.) led the Friars with four kills. Sarah Daneliak (Naperville, Ill.) registered three kills on six attempts for a .333 hitting percentage. It marked her first appearance in game action since 2018.
-Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) registered a set-high four assists to go with seven digs.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS:
-Set 2 was a back-and-forth affair as the score was tied on 16 different occasions, in addition to seven lead changes.
-Barber led the Friars with 11 assists and seven digs in the second set.
-Emma Nelson (West Chester, Pa.) and Leitman led the team with six and four kills, respectively.
-As a team, the Friars held Bryant to a .130 attack percentage and recorded 20 digs.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS:
-The Friars held the Bulldogs to an even lower hitting percentage in the third set, .059.
-Providence had a balanced defense, with five different players recording two digs apiece.
-Barber added 10 assists in the third set.
-Nelson led the team in kills, with six. Sasha Rudich (Austin, Texas) recorded four kills.
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS:
-The Friars totaled five blocks as a team in the fourth set to secure a 3-1 victory over the Bulldogs.
-Nelson led team in kills (six), followed by Leitman, who registered three.
-Barber finished the last set with a team-high 13 assists, and added two kills.
- Natalie Benson (Bourbonnais, Ill.) and Leitman each recorded two digs.
MATCH NOTES:
- For the match, Providence hit .199, with 53 kills and 25 errors on 141 total attacks.
- Barber led Providence with 38 assists and a team-high of 16 digs.
-Nelson finished the day with a team-high 18 kills. Leitman finished second on the team in kills, with 13.
WHAT'S NEXT:
Providence will return to action on Monday, Feb. 22. The Friars will face host University of Rhode Island at 7:00 p.m. in Alumni Hall.
