PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College volleyball team defeated the University of Rhode Island, 3-1, at Alumni Hall on Feb. 22 in Providence, R.I. The Friars improved to 2-0 on the season with the victory.
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS:
Maryann Boyle (Blacklick, Ohio) recorded a .600 hitting percentage in the first set.
Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) contributed to the Providence offense with 11 assists, leading all players in that category.
Mackenzie Taylor (Holbrook, N.Y.) and
Jennifer Leitman (Irvine, Calif.) led the Friars' defense with four and three digs, respectively.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS:
After a back-and-forth battle with the Rams, the Friars dropped the second set, 25-22.
The Friars tallied three total team blocks.
Leitman led the Friars' attack with four kills, while
Emma Nelson (West Chester, Pa.) and
Elena Leontaridou (Thessaloniki, Greece) were not far behind with three kills each.
Barber led the Friars' defense, totaling four digs while pacing the Friars in assists (seven).
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS:
The Friars went on a 5-2 run to win the set, 25-21.
Emma Fink (Western Springs, Ill.) led the Friars in kills (four), while Barber led in assists (10).
Providence had three total team blocks in the third set.
Fink and Leontaridou each had two block assists.
Barber lead the Friars in digs (4).
The Friars held the Ram to a .000 hitting percentage in the set.
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS:
The Friars claimed the match with a 25-19 victory in the fourth set.
Providence held URI to a .132 hitting percentage and had two total team blocks.
Nelson lead the Friars in kills in the fourth set (four).
Barber again lead in assists (11).
Taylor tallied three digs, while
Natalie Benson added two digs in the fourth set.
MATCH NOTES:
The Friars had two players with double digit kills, with Nelson (16) and Leitman (12).
Barber tallied a total of 39 assists to lead all players in the match.
Providence had two players with double digit digs with Barber recording 11 and Leitman recording 10 .
Leontaridou totaled seven blocks in the victory, leading all players in the match.
WHAT'S NEXT: The Friars will return to action at home to open up their first BIG EAST match of the season on Friday, Mar. 5 against Seton Hall at 5:00 p.m. in South Orange, NJ.
