Volleyball Set To Begin BIG EAST Competition

The Friars will play Seton Hall in the opening weekend.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College volleyball team has concluded its non-conference schedule and will now begin BIG EAST competition. The Friars will take on the Seton Hall University from South Orange, N.J. on Friday, March 5 at 5:00 p.m. and on Saturday, March 6 at 5:00 p.m. Providence finished their non-conference schedule with a 2-0 record. The Friars look to improve upon a 1-17 conference record last season.
 
SCOUTING THE FRIARS: The Friars have kicked off the season with two nonconference wins, entering BIG EAST play with a 2-0 record. Providence most recently defeated the University of Rhode Island on Feb. 22, 3-1. Emma Nelson (West Chester, Pa.) and Jennifer Leitman (Irvine, Calif.) led the team offensively, both with double digit kills (16 and 12, respectively). Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) led all players in the match in assists (39) while Elena Leontaridou (Thessaloniki, Greece) led all players in the match in blocks (7).
 
Nelson (West Chester, Pa.) leads the Friars with 34 kills on 82 total attacks. The sophomore currently ranks second in kills per set (4.25) in the BIG EAST.
 
Emma Fink (Western Springs, Ill.) holds a team-high .400 hitting percentage which is second in the BIG EAST.
 
Barber has team-highs 77 assists and 27 digs on the season. The senior ranks fifth in assists per sets (9.62) in the conference and has tallied two double-doubles in two matches.
 
Leontaridou earned BIG EAST weekly honors this past week, leading the league in blocks per set (1.75). She contributed five block assists and seven triple blocks in the team's victory over Rhode Island. She also tallied six kills and two digs.
 
 
SCOUTING THE PIRATES
Last weekend, the Pirates defeated Sacred Heart University, 3-1, on Feb. 27 and have a 2-1 record on the season. Three pirates recorded double-doubles in the match, and the team totaled 15 blocks. The Pirates were picked fourth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll. In all-time series against the Pirates, the Friars trail closely with a 16-18 record.
 
Freshman Perri Lucas holds a team high of 49 kills. This past week, Lucas was named BIG EAST Freshman off the Week, having led the team offensively in their victory over Sacred Heart with 18 kills and 11 digs. She has collected two double-doubles in three contests and holds a team-high 49 kills on 132 total attacks.
 
Fellow Pirate Tsvetelina Ilieva ranks second on the team in most kills (35) and is third on the team in digs (36).
 
Taylor Jakubowski leads the Pirates with 120 assists and ranks fourth in the BIG EAST for assists per set (10.00).
 
Raygan Murray has recorded a team-high 51 digs and ranks fourth in the BIG EAST in digs per set (4.25).
 

WHAT'S NEXT: The Friars will return home to take on the UConn Huskies on Friday, March 12 at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, March 13 at 4:00 p.m.
