Indoor Track Competes At Boston University Multi-Team Meet

BOSTON, Mass.- The Providence College men's and women's indoor track teams kicked off their 2021-22 season at the Boston University Multi-Team Meet on Saturday, Dec. 4. Providence had four women runners qualify for the ECAC Championships which will take place on Mar. 5-6 in Boston, Mass.
 
For the Friar women, personal bests were set all-around. Maria Coffin (Annapolis, Md.) posted a personal-best of 15:55.0 in the 5000-meter, finishing fourth in her section while Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England) set a personal record in the 3000-meter in a time of 9:20.5, placing first in her section. In the 1000-meter, Alex O'Neill (Ennis, Ireland) and Halle Atkinson (Franklin, Mass.) finished first (2:48.18) and second (2:51.69), respectively, both also setting personal records. All four Friars qualified for the ECAC Championships due to their performances in their respective races.
 
On the men's side, Marcelo Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) ran a personal best of 13:42.39 in the 5000-meter, finishing sixth in his section and setting the second fastest 5000-meter time ever for a Providence College athlete behind Geoff Smith. Sophomore Liam Back (New Plymouth, New Zealand) placed third in the 3000-meters in a time of 7:54.30. In that time, Back broke the New Zealand Junior record in the 3000-meters as well as the fourth all-time record at Providence College in the event.
 
The Friars men and women return after the holidays on Jan. 22 for the Coaches Tribute meet, hosted by the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, R.I.
