FAIRFIELD, CONN. – Sophomore
Matt Grillo recorded a career-high six goals and matched a career-high with seven points as the Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated Sacred Heart, 14-8, on Saturday afternoon in Fairfield, Conn.
FIRST QUARTER:
• Sacred Heart got on the board first with 7:46 to play in the opening quarter.
• The Friars responded with a pair to take a 2-1 lead.
John Hoffman (Smithtown, N.Y.) off a feed from
Matt Grillo (Setauket, N.Y.) on a man-up opportunity and
Ryan Nawrocki (Smithtown, N.Y.) exactly three minutes later.
• The Pioneers knotted the game at 2-2 with 17 seconds remaining in the quarter.
SECOND QUARTER:
• Providence opened the second quarter with six-consecutive goals to take an 8-2 lead.
• Sean Leahey (Cranford, N.J.) re-gained the lead for the Friars with 12:17 to go in the quarter.
• Hoffman added his second of the afternoon, followed up by back-to-back strikes from Grillo to make it 6-2.
• Nawrocki also chipped in his second goal of the game off an assist from
Dan Axelson (Cohasset, Mass.).
• Axelson made it an 8-2 with 3:58 to go in the quarter.
• Sacred Heart added a late goal to cut the deficit to five entering halftime.
THIRD QUARTER:
• The Friars extended their lead to eight at 11-3 with three goals to open the third quarter. Grillo completed his hat trick and added his fourth of the day, while Leahey added his second.
• Sacred Heart responded to make it 11-4 with 2:50 to play.
• Grillo added his fifth goal of the game to make it a 12-4 game before the Pioneers scored with one second remaining on the clock for a 12-5 deficit after three quarters.
FOURTH QUARTER:
• The Pioneers outscored the Friars by a 3-2 margin in the final quarter.
• Grillo tallied his sixth goal of the day with 10:57 remaining.
• Axelson cashed in with his second of the day on the man-up opportunity.
• Providence finished the day 3-for-5 on the man-up.
GAME NOTES:
• Grillo registered his fifth hat trick in six games and recorded a career-high six goals.
• Axelson posted his first career multi-assist game and matched a career-high with four points.
• Burgdorf matched a career-high with 16 saves.
• The Friars improved to 3-1 on the road this season.
