Men's Lacrosse 2020 Season Review

A collection of highlights from the 2020 men's lacrosse season.

2020 MEN'S LACROSSE SEASON REVIEW
Record: 5-1

• Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, spring practices and competitions were canceled on March 13 for the remainder of the season. The Friars completed their shortened season with a 5-1 overall record. 
 

• The Friars captured their second Ocean State Cup Championship in the last three years with a 13-12 victory over Brown in overtime on Feb. 29. Sean Leahey scored the game-winning goal for the Friars with 1:16 left in OT. It also marked the Friars' second victory over Brown all-time. 
 

• The Friars completed their abbreviated season ranked No. 1 in the nation in man-down defense (.938) and No. 3 in the nation in scoring defense (8.00).  
 

• Providence went 1-0 in overtime contests. The Friars defeated Brown, 13-12, on Feb. 29.  
 

• Providence held four of its six opponents to single-digit goals. 
 

• Providence recorded three of its five victories on the road, having posted a 3-1 mark away from Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. The team's only loss of the season came against Saint Joseph's (10-8) in Philadelphia, Pa. 
 

• Junior Toby Burgdorf was putting together an exceptional season between the pipes in his first year as the Friars' full-time goaltender. He finished the season ranked second in the nation in save percentage (.628), third in goals against average (7.94) and 13th in saves per game (13.50). He was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week three times (Feb. 10, Feb. 17, March 4) and earned BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll recognition on March 9.  
 

• Sophomore attackman Matt Grillo recorded a hat trick in five of the Friars' six games, including a career-high six goals vs. Sacred Heart. Grillo finished the season ranked 20th in the nation in goals per game (3.50) among 147 NCAA Division I lacrosse players eligible for ranking.  
 

• Junior Emmett Jennings finished the year ranked 14th in the nation in caused turnovers per game (2.00). He was named to the USILA Division I Team of the Week (Feb. 3).  
 

• Senior Tim Hinrichs was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. The midfielder finished the season with eight points on four goals and four assists. He recovered six ground balls and caused one turnover.  
 

Matt Grillo ranked first on the team in points (25) and goals (21). Senior Sean Leahey led the team in assists, with 13. He ranked second on the squad in points (22) and tied for third in goals (9). Senior Dan Axelson ranked second in goals, with 11, and recorded 14 points overall. Senior Ryan Nawrocki and freshman John Hoffman rounded out the list of Friars who recorded double-digit points.  Nawrocki tallied 13 points on six goals and seven assists, while Hoffman tallied 11 points on nine goals and two assists.
