Men’s And Women’s Indoor Track Complete Day One At BIG EAST Championships

Abbey Wheeler in the 5,000-meter and the women’s DMR took first-place in day one in Geneva, Ohio.

GENEVA, OHIO- The Providence College men's and women's indoor track teams completed the first day of the BIG EAST Championships in Geneva, Ohio on Sunday, Mar. 1. Day one was highlighted by first-place finishes by Abbey Wheeler (Elmira, N.Y.) in the 5,000-meter and the group of Tessa Hunt (Wellington, New Zealand), Niamh Gowing (Dublin, Ireland), Alex O'Neill (Ennis, Ireland) and Lilly Tuck (Sunderland, Canada) in the distance medley relay.
 
In the women's 5,000-meter, Wheeler was in the lead pack off the gun. As the race progressed, the lead pack went down to three, Wheeler, Emily Royston from Butler and Anna Kostarellis from Xavier. With five laps remaining, Wheeler broke away from Royston and Kostarellis. Wheeler finished with a time of 15:49.65, 14 seconds faster than the next runner. This is Wheeler's first BIG EAST Championship.
 
For the women's distance medley relay, Hunt had a quick start in the 1,200-meter leg off the gun to put Providence in first and the Friars did not look back. Hunt handed off to Gowing in the 400-meter leg who kept the lead. Gowing followed it up by handing it off to O'Neill in the 800-meter. Tuck finished up the victory for Providence in the 1,600-meter leg. The four rookies finished in a time of 11:41.69. This is the first BIG EAST Championship for all four runners.
 
Other Notable Performances:
Bridget Mitchell (Milton, Mass.) posted a time of 4:57.40 in the mile to qualify for the finals on Monday, Mar. 2 at 11:00 a.m.
Nick Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.) had the second fastest time out of both heats in the mile run with a time of 4:15.58 to qualify for the finals. The men's mile final will be Monday, Mar. 2 at 11:10 a.m.
In the women's 800-meter Halle Atkinson (Franklin, Mass.) had the third quickest time (2:11.80) and qualified for the finals on Monday, Mar. 2 at 12:20 p.m. Dana Lowney posted a personal-best time of 2:14.48.
Along with Wheeler winning the 5,000-meter, Maria Coffin (Annapolis, Md.) and Orla O'Connor (Waterford, Ireland) finished in the top-10. Coffin crossed the line in fifth (16:36.37) and O'Connor placed in tenth (17:08.48).
In the men's 5,000-meter, Ryan Gallagher (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) finished fifth with a time of 14:18.09.
The men's DMR team of Angus White (New Plymouth, New Zealand), Jared Grossi (Warwick, R.I.), Ryan Jendzejec (Chappaqua, N.Y.) and Michael O'Leary (St. James, N.Y.) placed fourth with a time of 9:49.41.
