Spiwak Explodes For Career-High 28 Points In Win Over Butler

Friars defeated the Bulldogs, 73-52, at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – The Providence College women's basketball team ran away with a 73-52 victory at Butler on Dec. 5 to improve to 1-1 in the BIG EAST Conference (3-3 overall). Senior guard Kyra Spiwak poured in a career-high 28 points, including 23 in the first half to fuel the win.
 
FIRST QUARTER:
• Butler took a 6-0 lead on back-to-back three pointers to start the game.
• The Friars used a 13-0 run during a span of 6:48 to close the first quarter and give Providence a 17-9 advantage.
Mary Baskerville paced the Friars with eight points and six rebounds
 
SECOND QUARTER:
• The Friars hit nine-straight shot attempts to take a 40-19 lead with 2:48 left in frame. 
• The shooting performance fueled a 16-2 run over a span of 4:35.
• Providence outscored Butler 32-15 in the second quarter overall to take a 49-24 lead at halftime.
Kyra Spiwak scored a career-high 23 points in 17 minutes of action in the first half.
• Spiwak hit 8-11 attempts from the field, including 7-9 shots from beyond the arc.
• She made each of her last six shot attempts heading into the break. 
• Baskerville entered the locker room at the break with 12 points and seven rebounds. 
• Baskerville was 5-5 from the field and 2-2 from the foul line.
• As a team, Providence shot 76-percent from the field (19-25) and 75-percent from three (9-12).
• The Friars were 8-8 from beyond the arc in the second quarter as a team. 
 
THIRD QUARTER:
• Butler opened the action with a traditional three-point play in the third.
• The Bulldogs scored the first 10 points of the quarter to get within 49-34. 
• Spiwak halted the run with a jumper at the 6:15 mark.
• Butler outscored Providence 12-2 heading into the media timeout at 4:13 (51-36).
Lauren Sampson hit back-to-back three pointers to get the Friars back on the board.
• From there, both teams went silent offensively, for over two minutes before Sampson hit the second of two free throws with 57 seconds left.
• The Friars held a 58-39 lead going into the final 10 minutes of play.
 
FOURTH QUARTER:
• Sampson hit a traditional three-point play at the 8:11 mark to give the Friars a 61-41 lead.
• Butler went over five minutes without a field goal until Naira Caceres put back and offensive board with 1:16 to play.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Spiwak finished with a career-high 28 points on 10-17 shooting, including an 8-12 performance from three-point territory.
• Baskerville recorded the 13th double-double of her career on 13 points and 11 boards.
• Sampson posted a career-high 10 points, all of which came in the second half.
Olivia Orlando dished a career-high eight assists.
Alyssa Geary recorded eight points on 4-6 shooting and added five boards and a career-best six assists.
• Butler was playing its first game of the season and was without its top two scorers from a season ago (Oumou Toure and Genesis Parker).
• Ikako Adika scored a game-high 29 points for Butler.
• The Friars outrebounded the Bulldogs, 36-28.
• Providence dished 21 assists as a team, marking the most handouts in a game for the Friars since recording 22 against Hartford on Nov. 13, 2019.
• Providence recovered from its season-worst shooting performance against Marquette less than 24 hours earlier to shoot a season-best 59.6-percent from the field (28-47), including 52.2-percent from deep (12-23).
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• Providence College returns to Alumni Hall for three-straight home games beginning with Maine on Thursday, Dec. 10. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 2:00 p.m. and will be broadcast live on FloHoops.
