PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) of the Providence College women's hockey team was named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career, as announced by the conference on Monday, Jan. 20.
Abstreiter helped the Friars improve to 13-9-2 on the season and 10-7-0 in Hockey East play with a series sweep of the University of New Hampshire this weekend. She made 64 total saves and allowed just two goals over the 120 minutes of play. Her overall save percentage for the weekend was .970 and her goals against average was 1.00. Abstreiter set her career-high with 32 saves in Providence's opening 3-1 victory before matching the feat the following day in the Friars' 2-1 win over the Wildcats.
The redshirt-sophomore netminder holds a 5-4-0 record on the season. She has recorded 231 saves, posting a 1.66 goals against average and .939 save percentage. She ranks seventh in the nation in save percentage (.939).
Abstreiter and the Friars take on Boston College in a home-and-home series this weekend. Games are set for Friday (Jan. 24) at 2:00 p.m. and Saturday (Jan. 25) at 2:00 p.m.
