PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team fell to Boston University, 8-7, on Sunday, Feb. 3 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
1st Quarter: Chris Gray picked up where he left off last season for the Terriers, scoring the first two goals of the game. Freshman
Matt Grillo (Setauket, N.Y.) responded with his first-career goal to make it 2-1. BU went back up by two goals before freshman
Jake Antonucci (Westwood, Mass.) notched his first-career tally. Jack Collins scored his second goal of the quarter for the Terriers to make it 4-2 with 2:35 remaining on the clock. Providence answered the Terriers once again, as
Tim Hinrichs fired a shot top-shelf.
Kevin McCordic (Medfield, Mass.) picked up the assist on the play.
2nd Quarter: Providence opened the second quarter with goals from
Nick Shaw (Canton, Mass.) and
Ryan Nawrocki (Smithtown, N.Y.) to take a 5-4 lead. At the 5:56 mark, James Burr tied the game for BU. The Friars had a two-man advantage for 30 seconds and then a one-man advantage for 30 more seconds late in the quarter but were unable to convert. By halftime, BU's goalie Joe McSorley already had 14 saves. The Friars held a 17-7 advantage in shots in the second frame.
3rd Quarter: The third quarter featured another offensive advantage for the Friars, as Providence outshot BU, 11-3.
Sean Leahey (Cranford, N.J.) scored the lone goal of the stanza to give the Friars a 6-5 lead at the 4:16 mark. His first goal of the season was assisted by
Brendan Kearns (Wantagh, N.Y.).
4th Quarter: Just 41 seconds into the fourth quarter, Gray tied the game at 6-6 with his third goal of the game. The Terriers struck again to regain the lead with 4:31 left to play. Providence had to kill a 30 second EMO for the Terriers and successfully stopped BU to keep the game within one goal. Shortly after the stop, BU was able to extend the lead to two goals with a Jett Dziama goal. Providence made it a one-goal game with 2:32 remaining, but were unable to ultimately tie the game. Kearns scored the final goal for the Friars.
Game Notes:
- Providence had seven different goal scorers. In total, eight different Friars recorded points.
- Brendan Kearns and Ryan Nawrocki each had two points on one goal and one assist.
- Joe McSorley made a career-high 24 saves for the Terriers. His previous career-high was 16.
- Freshmen Jake Antonucci and Matt Grillo each recorded their first-career goals in the game.
- The Friars and Terriers have been separated by just one goal in the last three meetings between the teams.
- Tate Boyce (Matthews, N.C.) finished with 10 total saves for Providence.
- Providence only committed 12 turnovers, while the Terriers had 23 in the game
- Each team went 0-2 on extra-man opportunities.
- Providence looks ahead its next contest at Holy Cross. That game is set for Feb. 9 at 3:35 p.m.
