Women's Hoops Defeats Creighton On The Road, 77-63

Friars earn first-ever win at D.J. Sokol Arena and improve to 5-4 in the BIG EAST.
OMAHA, NEB.– The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Creighton, 77-63, in BIG EAST action on Jan. 26 at D.J. Sokol Arena in Omaha, Neb.  It marked the Friars' first victory all-time against the Bluejays on their home court, as the squad improved to 13-8 overall and 5-4 in the BIG EAST Conference. Creighton dropped to 10-10 overall (4-5 BIG EAST).

The Friars trailed by as many as seven (19-12) with 2:00 minutes left in the first quarter. A 5-0 run cut Creighton's lead to 19-17, but the Bluejays closed the quarter with a Payton Brotzki three-pointer to make the score 22-17.

The Friars out-scored the Bluejays 21-15 in the second quarter as PC shot a blistering 76.9-percent from the floor (10-13).  Providence led by as many as four (34-30) with 2:41 left on the clock. Creighton fought back to regain a one-point advantage (37-36) with 21-seconds to play, but the Friars' Jovana Nogic (Belgrade, Serbia) beat the buzzer to end the half.  Providence went to the locker room with a 38-37 lead.

Nine Friars cracked the scoring column in the first half, led by Nogic's nine points.  Audrey Faber paced Creighton with 11 points and five boards.

Providence out-scored Creighton 15-3 to start the third quarter, but the Bluejays managed an 8-2 run to close the frame and get within seven (55-48) heading into the final 10 minutes.

Faber opened the fourth quarter with a lay-up to close the gap (55-50) 1:08 into the action, but Providence responded with five-straight points to make it a 10-point game (60-50) with 7:03 left.  The Bluejays got within eight on two occasions down the stretch, with the last threat coming at 3:38 (65-57). Providence shut the door with a 9-0 run to put the game out of reach.

Nogic finished the day with a game-high 18 points, while fellow senior Maddie Jolin (Rehoboth, Mass.) chipped in 12 points.  Eight of her 12 points came in the third quarter as the Friars made their move. Â

Freshman guard Earlette Scott (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored a career-high 12 points in the victory on 4-6 shooting from the field and a 4-4 effort from the charity stripe.  She also collected a game-high three steals along with Nogic and freshman Kaela Webb (Pontiac, Mich.). Webb, Jolin and sophomore Chanell Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) each dished four assists.

Olivia Orlando (Winthrop, Mass.) led Providence on the glass with six rebounds and chipped in six points.

Providence shot 50-percent on the day (29-58), including a 7-16 showing from beyond the arc (.438). Creighton shot 44.2-percent from the field and cashed in on 13-30 three-point attempts (.433).

The Friars forced 20 turnovers, while taking great care of the ball on their own end with just five miscues.  That advantage led to a 24-3 scoring edge in points off of turnovers for Providence. PC also dominated inside the paint, 34-18.

With the victory, Providence has won three-straight games in BIG EAST play for the first time since the 2001-02 season.  Furthermore, the Friars find themselves at 5-4 in league at the halfway point of the conference schedule.  With nine regular-season games remaining, Providence's five wins are the most in BIG EAST Conference action since 2011-12.

Additionally, the Friars are in the midst of their best six-game stretch in BIG EAST Conference action since 1997, when the squad also won five of six games.

The Friars return to action on Friday, Feb. 1 against Villanova at 7:00 p.m.  The game will be played at Finneran Pavilion in Villanova, Pa., and is scheduled to be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) via FOX Sports Go.
