FOURTH-QUARTER COMEBACK FALLS SHORT AS ST. JOHN'S DEFEATS FRIARS 62-57

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated by St. John's, 62-57, on Jan. 31 in Providence, R.I. The Friars dropped to 10-13 on the season (3-9 BIG EAST), while the Red Storm improved to 17-7 (7-6 BIG EAST).
 
1ST QUARTER:
• St. John's went on a 7-0 run during a span of 23 seconds to claim a 19-14 lead with 1:01 left to play in the first.
Sabou Gueye scored the final five points of the quarter to get the Friars within 20-19 at the break.
• The Friars outscored the Red Storm 16-4 in the paint during the first quarter.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• St. John's opened the second quarter with a 6-0 spurt to go ahead 26-19.
• Providence responded with a 7-0 run to reclaim the lead (32-29) with 1:54 to play. The run was highlighted by back-to-back threes from Princess Moody and Sophi Hall.
• The Red Storm closed the half with a 7-0 run to take a 36-32 lead into the locker room.
• Gueye led the Friars with nine first-half points, while Daniela Abies paced the Red Storm with 11.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• St. John's extended its lead to 48-34 with a 12-2 scoring run to start the third.
• The Red Storm outscored the Friars 21-7 overall in the third to claim a 57-39 advantage.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• Trailing by 18, the Friars managed to cut the deficit to six (61-55) with 1:34 to play.
• The Friars' defense held St. John's scoreless for 3:53 during the rally until hitting one of two free throws with 13-seconds left.
• The Red Storm held on for a 62-57 victory.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Gueye reached double figures for a team-best 16th time. She finished the day with a game-high 18 points and added six rebounds two assists and two steals.
Orlagh Gormley netted 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals. She has dished 3+ assists in 19 games this season.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 4 against Marquette in BIG EAST play. The game will be played at the Al McGuire Center in Milwaukee, Wis. and is scheduled to tipoff at 7:30 p.m. (ET) on ESPN+.
