VILLANOVA, PA. – The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated by Villanova, 83-68, on Jan. 27 at Finneran Pavilion in Villanova, Pa. The Friars dropped to 10-12 on the season (3-8 BIG EAST), while the Wildcats improved to 16-5 overall (9-3 BIG EAST).
1ST QUARTER:
• Providence held a 10-9 lead midway through the first quarter after starting the game 5-8 from the field (.625). Villanova shot 33-percent during that span (3-9) and all three field goals came from beyond the arc.
• Villanova closed the quarter with an 11-5 edge in scoring to take a 20-15 lead at the intermission.
• Both teams shot 47-percent from the field during the quarter, each converting 7-15 shot attempts. However, the Wildcats benefited from a 6-11 performance from three-point territory (.545).
2ND QUARTER:
• The Friars started the second with a 4-0 spurt to cut the deficit to one (20-19).
• The Wildcats responded with back-to-back threes to force a Providence timeout and go ahead 26-19 (8:09).
• The Friars used a 14-3 run to take a 33-29 lead with 3:42 on the clock.
• Villanova answered with a 7-0 run after going scoreless for nearly four minutes to retake the lead (36-33).
• Providence trailed 40-35 at halftime, despite shooting 52-percent from the field (14-27).
• The Wildcats scored 30 of their 40 points from beyond the arc (10-23).
• Providence's
Sabou Gueye led all scorers with 14 points, while Jasmine Bascoe recorded 10 points for Villanova.
3RD QUARTER:
•
Orlagh Gormley hit a triple for Providence to open the third (40-38).
• Villanova responded with a 12-0 run over to force a Providence timeout with 6:32 on the clock (52-38).
• Providence cut the lead to nine on two occasions with less than two minutes to play.
• A three from the Wildcats with 35-seconds on the clock provided a 65-53 advantage heading into the intermission.
4TH QUARTER:
• Villanova pushed out to its largest lead of the game (17) with 8:27 remaining (72-55).
• The Friars got as close as 12 on three occasions down the stretch.
• The Wildcats claimed a 15-point victory (83-68).
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Gueye scored a game-high 22 points on 10-18 shooting and added six rebounds, five assists and one steal.
• Gueye leads the Friars with six 20-point games. Four of her six 20-point games have come during BIG EAST play.

Teneisia Brown scored 14 points, including 10 in the second half.
• Gormley tallied nine points, three assist, two rebounds and one steal.
•
Ashley Dinges finished the night with eight points and matched Gueye with a team-best six rebounds.
• The Friars shot 50-percent on the night (28-56), while Villanova converted 51-percent (33-65). The Wildcats created separation with a 15-34 performance from deep (.441).
• The Friars have scored 68+ points in a game six times this season. It marked Providence's first loss when scoring 68-or-more points (1-5).

• The Friars will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 31 against St. John's. The game will be played at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. and is scheduled to tipoff at 1:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
