PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team fired on all cylinders in an 80-77 victory over BIG EAST foe Creighton on Jan. 17 in Providence, R.I.
Sabou Gueye (22) and
Orlagh Gormley (21) combined to score 43 points and the Friars shot a season-best 52-percent in the win. Providence improved to 10-10 on the season (3-6 BIG EAST), while Creighton dropped to 7-11 overall (3-6 BIG EAST).
1ST QUARTER:
• Providence got out to a 5-0 start and led 10-7 at the media timeout (4:58).
• The Friars extended their lead to as many as seven on a
Payton Dunbar triple at the 2:53 mark (16-9).
• The Bluejays used a 10-0 run to take their first lead of the day with less than a minute on the clock (19-16).
• Gueye halted the run on Providence's next possession, but Creighton maintained its lead at the intermission (21-18).
• Gueye led six Friars in the scoring column with six points in the first quarter.
2ND QUARTER:
• Providence started the second quarter on a 5-0 spurt to regain the lead.
• Neither team was able to gain more than a three-point lead in the quarter as it featured three ties six lead changes.
• The Jays held a 38-36 lead at halftime.
• Providence shot 52-percent from the field in the first half (15-29), while Creighton converted 47-percent of its shots (17-36).
• Gormley led all scorers with 15 points on 6-6 shooting from the field, including a 3-3 performance from beyond the arc. Her 15 points matched her career high.
3RD QUARTER:
• Creighton held a 48-45 lead at the media timeout after outscoring Providence 10-9 to start the third (4:56).
• Providence used a 6-0 run during a span of 1:35 to take a 51-48 lead and force a Creighton timeout with 3:05 showing on the clock.

Ashley Dinges extended the Friars' run to 9-0 with a triple after an offensive board by Gueye (54-48).
• Providence outscored Creighton 20-17 in the frame and held a one-point advantage going into the final 10 minutes of action (56-55).
• Gueye scored eight points in the quarter, giving her 18 for the game. Gormley entered the fourth quarter with a career-high 17 points.
4TH QUARTER:
• Providence pushed out to a six-point lead with a 6-1 edge to start the fourth.
• The Friars held a 64-61 lead at the final media timeout of day (4:36).
• Out of the break,
Sami Mancini scored in the paint to put Providence ahead 66-61.
• Creighton cut the deficit to one, but
Sophi Hall hit a three and Mancini hit a pair of free throws to push the Friars' lead to 73-67 with 1:58 to play.
• The Bluejays got within 73-71 on a quick 4-0 spurt.
• Gormley converted a pair of free throws with 1:05 to play and Creighton committed a turnover on its next possession.
• Hall went to the line where she made one of two attempts to give Providence a 76-71 edge.
• The Bluejays were fouled on their next possession and set to the line in the bonus. Ava Zediker made both attempts.
• The teams traded field goals, scoring on each of their ensuring possessions (78-75).
• Gormley converted two free throws with 20-seconds left to extend Providence's lead to five (80-75).
• The free throws allowed her to eclipse the 20-point mark for the first time in her career.
• Providence held firm for the 80-77 victory.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Gueye scored a game-high 22 points on 11-20 shooting and added seven boards, three assists, two blocks and two steals. It marked her fifth 20+ point game of the season and the second time this year she scored 20-points in back-to-back games (scored 22 points at Butler).
• Gormley finished with a career-high 21 points on 7-12 shooting from the field, including 3-4 from beyond the arc. She also converted 4-4 attempts from the foul line – all in the final 1:05 of the game.
• Mancini scored a career-high 12 points on 4-8 shooting from the field and a 4-4 performance at the foul line. She grabbed four rebounds and dished one assist in just over 18 minutes of action.
• Eight of Mancini's 12 points came in the fourth quarter.
• Hall finished with 10 points, marking her third double-digit game of the season.
• The last time two Friars scored 20-points in a BIG EAST game dates back to Jan. 24, 2024 against Seton Hall.
Grace Efosa scored 29 points and
Marta Morales Romero added 26 in a 82-76 victory in overtime.
• The last time two Friars scored 20-points in a BIG EAST game of regulation length was on Jan. 27, 2017 in a 66-64 win over Marquette. Jovana Nogic scored 27 points and Sarah Beal chipped in 25.
• Four Friars reached double figures for just the second time this season.
• The Friars are 6-3 this season when three-or-more players score in double figures, including a 2-0 mark when four players reach double digits.
• Providence snapped a four-game winless streak against Creighton. Its last win over the Jays dates back to Jan. 4, 2023 in Omaha, Neb. (79-75).
• The Friars posted season-highs in points (80), field goals made (30) and field-goal percentage (.517, 30-58).

• The Friars will hit the road to face Seton Hall on Tuesday, Jan. 20 at Walsh Gymnasium in South Orange, N.J. Tipoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
