BOSTON, MASS. - The Providence College women's track and field team competed at the John Thomas Terrier Invitational on Friday, Jan. 25. The women's performances in the distance races were the highlights of the meet for the Friars.

Senior Millie Paladino (Morgantown, W. Va.) competed in the fastest heat of the 1,000 meters at the John Thomas Terrier Invitational. Early in the race, she positioned herself in third. At the halfway mark, the two leaders surged and opened a small gap. Paladino then passed the leaders in the last 100 meters to win the race. Paladino would go on to finish first overall and break the 29 year old school record. The record was previously held by Irish Olympian, Sinead Delahunty in a time of 2:47.37. Paladino's time also broke the New England Collegiate Record (2:44.10) and ranks No. 10 all time in the NCAA.

Senior Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Western Australia) also placed first overall in the 3,000 meters. At the gun, Ilarda ran straight to the front of the pack to take the lead. She led for most of the race and never fell out of the top three. With one lap to go Ilarda began to surge and break away to finish first in a time of 9:12.58. Her time is the leading time in the NCAA at this point in the season.

Graduate student Regan Rome (Dalla, Pa.) and sophomore Maria Coffin (Annapolis, Md.) shined in the fastest section of the 5,000 meters. Rome positioned herself perfectly in the lead group, passing through the 3,000 in 9:52. She moved up throughout the race and challenged for the lead over the last 1,000 meters. Rome broke away in the final lap with a strong kick to finish first in a time of 16:27.34. Coffin ran a solid race from the chase pack. She positioned herself well, coming away with a six place finish in a time of 16:46.94.

The John Thomas Invitational continues on Saturday, Jan. 26 with the men's races. The women's next race will be at the New England Championships on  Feb. 2-3 .
