STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The Providence College men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Penn Challenge on Saturday, Jan. 19. The men's team finished in seventh place with a total of 16 points, while the women's team finished third with 34 points.
Graduate student
Michael Wyman (Marion, Mass.) was the highlight of the Penn Challenge for the Friars on the men's side. Wyman competed in the mile against a solid field of competitors. He positioned himself well in the race and finished the last 250 meters strong. Wyman finished first overall in a time of 4:05.77.
Freshman
Marcus Kemp (Kitchener, Ontario) made his debut for the Friars in the 3,000 meter race. Kemp ran a solid race, finishing fourth overall in a time of 8:21.95.
On the women's side there were two individual winners, senior Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Western Australia) and graduate student Regan Rome (Dalla, Pa.). Ilarda began the afternoon with a first place finish in the mile (4:46.81). She led the race from the gun and finished two seconds ahead of the second place finisher. Rome also took first place in the 3,000 meter race. Rome and teammate Maria Coffin (Annapolis, Md.) switched off the lead for the first couple laps of the race. As the race progressed, Rome began to pull away and never looked back. Rome finished first overall (9:40.65), finishing 16 seconds ahead of second.
Senior Millie Paladino (Morgantown, West Virginia) also had a strong performance in the 800 meters. Paladino finished third in a time of 2:08.94, setting a new personal best.

The Friars will compete at the Boston University Terrier Invitational in Boston, Mass. on Jan. 25-26. The women will race on Friday, Jan. 25 while the men will compete on Saturday. Jan. 26.
