MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Hockey Humanitarian Award Foundation announced on Thursday (Jan. 10) 17 nominees for the 2019 Hockey Humanitarian Award. Providence College senior defenseman
Vincent Desharnais (Laval, Quebec) was named as one of the 17 nominees.
The award is presented annually to college hockey's finest citizen – a student-athlete who makes significant contributions not only to his or her team but also to the community-at-large through leadership in volunteerism.
Recently, Desharnais hosted a "PC Beats Cancer" event in which over $5,100 was raised for the Gloria Gemma Foundation, which offers free programs and support services to breast cancer patients, survivors, and loved ones. The event was held to recognize Providence College student-athlete Clare Minnerath, a junior goaltender on the women's hockey team, who battled and beat lymphoma last year. All proceeds from the event were donated in Clare's name to the Gloria Gemma Foundation.
Desharnais, an Edmonton Oilers prospect, is currently in his second season serving as an alternate captain for the Friars, having appeared in 109 career games and totaling four goals and 19 assists over three-plus seasons at Providence College. He has earned Hockey East Academic Team honors over the past two seasons and was a 2018 inductee into Chi Alpha Sigma, which recognizes students with at least junior academic standing and a 3.40 grade-point average. A Management major, Desharnais was one of 32 Providence College student-athletes to earn induction into Chi Alpha Sigma last February.
Finalists for the 2019 Hockey Humanitarian Award will be announced in February. The recipient will be honored in a ceremony at the NCAA Men's Frozen Four on April 12 in Buffalo, N.Y.
