No. 2 Men’s Hockey Defeated By No. 3 Quinnipiac, 5-2, In NCAA Regional Round

Logan Sawyer recorded his fifth multi-point game of the season in the defeat.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The No. 2 Providence College men's hockey team fell to No. 3 Quinnipiac, 5-2, in the NCAA Regional at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls, S.D., on Thursday, March 26. Sophomore Logan Sawyer (Orangeville, Ontario) recorded a goal and an assist for his fifth multi-point game of the season in the loss.

NOTES
-Both teams skated scoreless through the first period. Quinnipiac was awarded one power play opportunity which the Friars successfully killed. Shots on goal through the first 20 minutes were 9-7 in favor of the Bobcats.
-The Bobcats scored the first goal of the game when Elliott Groenewold found the back of the net at 5:55 of the second period. Markus Vidicek and Mason Marcellus assisted on the play.
-With the team skating four-on-four, Quinnipiac extended their lead to 2-0 on a breakaway goal from Chris Pelosi. Antonin Verreault and Victor Czerneckianair earned the assists.
-With 1:55 remaining in the second period, Verreault made it 3-0 Bobcats, with assists from Tyler Borgula and Czerneckianair.
-Quinnipiac extended their lead in shots on goal to 22-18 after the second period.
-At 5:30 of the third period, freshman Quinn Mantei (Weyburn Sask.) was assessed a five-minute major and game misconduct for boarding.
-With 9:48 remaining in regulation and the teams skating four-on-four, sophomore Logan Sawyer (Orangeville, Ontario) cut into the Bobcats lead to make it 3-1. Junior Tanner Adams (Northport, N.Y.) recorded the lone assist. Quinnipiac challenged the goal for goaltender interference but were unsuccessful.
-The Friars cut the lead to 3-2 with 5:58 remaining on a goal by sophomore John Mustard (Dradell, N.J.) assisted by freshman Martin Masa (Brno, Czechia) and Sawyer. It's Sawyer's fifth multi-point game of the season and ninth of his career. It marked Mustard's 17th goal of the season, the most on the team.
-With 1:14 remaining in regulation, Quinnipiac secured the win with an empty-net goal from Ethan Wyttenbach, assisted by Braden Blace.
-Providence added the extra attacker again and Quinnipiac's Graham Sward made it 5-2. The goal was unassisted.
