Providence College honored its top student-athletes at the 57th Annual All-Sports Gala on Monday, April 30. The ceremony was held at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium on the campus of Providence College in Providence, R.I. A social preceded the event in `64 Hall. Earlier in the evening, the athletic department also honored its 2017-18 letter winners in a brief ceremony. The gathering of more than 300 student-athletes, coaches and staff members celebrated another successful year in Friartown.
Senior men's basketball standout Kyron Cartwright (Compton, Calif.), who is a two-time All-BIG EAST honoree and led the men's basketball team to a program-record fifth-consecutive NCAA Tournament, was named Male Athlete of the Year for Team Sports. Junior Ryan Trammell (Lake Mary, Fla.), who led the men's swimming and diving team in scoring this season, was named Male Athlete of the Year for Individual Sports. He set two individual school records and was a member of two relay teams that also set school records this year. On the women's side, field hockey player Megan Hamilton (Warrington, Pa.), who is one of three players in program history to earn All-BIG EAST honors four-consecutive seasons, was recognized as Female Athlete of the Year for Team Sports. Junior Millie Paladino (Morgantown, W. Va.), who claimed All-America honors and a BIG EAST individual title during the indoor track season, earned Female Athlete of the Year for Individual Sports.
Along with the Athlete of the Year Awards, six other major awards were presented at the gala. Graduate student Catarina Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) of the women's cross country and track teams was the winner of the Paul Connolly Award as the female athlete who has distinguished herself among her peers through sportsmanship, courage and honor. Senior men's ice hockey player Brian Pinho (North Andover, Mass.) was the recipient of the Mal Brown Award. The Mal Brown Award is given annually to the male athlete whose career of intercollegiate competition portrayed sportsmanship, courage and honor.
The Sine Qua Non Awards, given annually to the male and female athletes who have distinguished themselves among their peers without receiving proper recognition, were presented to graduate student men's soccer player Mark Jecewiz (Smithtown, N.Y.), and senior Katherine Fallon (Warren, N.J.) of the women's swimming and diving team. Senior Alanna Serviss (Chicago, Ill.), who is a member of the women's ice hockey program, was the recipient of the Jane Thompson Award, which is presented to the male or female senior student-athlete who personifies all that is good about being a student-athlete at Providence College and exhibits selflessness, dedication, loyalty, courage and perseverance.
Senior men's soccer player Colin Miller (Bel Air, Md.) was the recipient of the Rev. Robert A. Morris, O.P. '46 Memorial Award, which is given annually to a student-athlete who has had a profound impact on Providence College during their career, as selected by the Athletic Director and the senior administrative staff.
Cartwright led the men's basketball team to its fifth-straight 20-win season (21-14). The Friars also finished tied for third in the BIG EAST (10-8) and advanced to BIG EAST Championship game, where the team was defeated in overtime (76-66) by eventual national champion Villanova. Cartwright, who received All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention accolades, led the BIG EAST in assists in overall action (5.8 apg) and in conference play (5.8 apg.). Additionally, he averaged 11.8 points per game and 2.9 rebounds. For the season, Cartwright had 196 assists in 35 games. He ranks third all-time at Providence with 646 career assists and is one of only three Friars all-time to register 600 or more assists. He finished his career with 1,100 points, which ranks 38th all-time at Providence. In addition to his All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention honors, he also was named MVP of the 2K Classic and earned BIG EAST All-Tournament Team recognition.
Trammell led the Friars in team scoring during the 2017-2018 season with 257.25 points, recording lifetime best times in both the breaststroke and butterfly events. At the BIG EAST Championships, Trammell set four school records. In his specialties, he set the 100-yard (55.52) and 200-yard (2:04.35) breaststroke records. Joined by his relay teammates, Trammell was part of group that set school records in the 200-yard (1:34.28) and 400-yard (3:25.60) medley relays. Trammell closed out an outstanding season by qualifying for USA Swimming's Winter Nationals. At the program's 34th annual end-of-year banquet on April 15, Trammell received The Bowden Award. The accolade is named for Horace Bowden `89, and honors the most valuable student-athlete on the men's team in dual and championship meet competition.
Hamilton becomes the fourth field hockey player to earn Female Athlete of the Year honors (Team Sports) in the last five years. She is one of just three players in program history to earn All-BIG EAST recognition all four years of her collegiate career, joining Rachel Chamberlain `10 and Henni Tietze `15. She was a First-Team All-BIG EAST selection in 2016 and 2017 and was a Second-Team pick in 2014 and 2015. She also is the 12th player in program history to earn First-Team accolades in multiple seasons. Additionally, Hamilton finished her career as a two-time NFHCA All-Northeast Region honoree and was recently named a BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete Award winner. Hamilton concluded her career ranked 17th on the Friars' all-time scoring list (65 points) and tied for 14th all-time in career goals (27). She also recorded 11 assists during her career.
In the fall, Paladino earned her second All-BIG EAST cross country honor (2016, 2017) and her second All-Northeast Regional honor (2016, 2017). She helped the Friars finish 16th at the NCAA Championships as the second Friar across the line in 68th place. Paladino really hit her stride in the indoor season, when she ran the second fastest mile time (4:31.98) and the sixth fastest 3,000 meter time (9:05.10) in Providence history. At the BIG EAST Championships, Paladino won the 3,000 meters to become the sixth woman in BIG EAST history to have won both a mile and 3,000-meter title in her career. She also earned All-BIG EAST honors by running on the third place distance medley relay team. Paladino finished sixth at the NCAA Indoor Championships with a time of 4:34.93 to earn All-America First Team honors, the third All-America honor of her career.
During the cross country season, Rocha earned her fourth All-BIG EAST honor (2013, 2014, 2015, 2017) and fourth All-Northeast Regional honor (2013, 2014, 2015, 2017). Rocha won her second individual BIG EAST title when she claimed victory at the BIG EAST cross country Championships. She is the 10th Providence woman to win the individual cross country title. Rocha led Providence to its third straight NCAA Northeast Regional title and led the Friars to a 16th place finish at the NCAA Championships when she placed 61st. During the indoor season, Rocha won the third individual BIG EAST title of her career, when she won the 5,000 meters at the BIG EAST Championships.
Pinho, a team captain, guided the Friars to their program-record fifth-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and first Hockey East Championship Game appearance since 2001. He matched a career-high with 12 goals and finished second on the team in scoring with 32 points. He posted 115 career points (39g, 76a), a +52 rating and a .558 face-off percentage. He finished off his career appearing in 133 consecutive games and 156 games total, which ties the program record. A Third-Team Hockey East All-Star in 2017-18, Pinho also earned the league's Best Defensive Forward Award and the Frank Jones Award as New England's Best Defensive Forward. The North Andover, Mass. native signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the Washington Capitals at the conclusion of the season.
Jecewiz served as a two-time captain for the Friars and played in 68 total games over his five-year career. As a defender, he helped the team to 21 shutouts and logged over 6,000 minutes in his four seasons of playing time. In 2016, he was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team and tabbed an NSCAA Div. I All-Great Lakes Region First Team selection. He also claimed the team's Martin Hayes Defensive Most Valuable Player award. In 2017, Jecewiz was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST squad. He was also a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award and the team's Fr. Folsey Champion of Character award-winner. In his career as a Friar, the men's soccer program advanced to three NCAA Tournaments, including runs to the College Cup (2014) and Elite Eight (2016).
Fallon, captain of the team and a middle-distance and freestyle specialist, cemented herself as the all-time leading scorer for the women's swimming and diving program, having established the scoring record at the completion of her junior season. Fallon finished her senior year with 1196.25 career points, leading the pack by over 275 points. She led the Friars in scoring during three of her four years with the program, and established six individual records. She also was part of a school-record setting relay team during her impressive career. During her tenure, she earned the program's O'Neill Family Award in 2015, as the team's most outstanding freshman student-athlete. She also received the Cindi Luciani Award, as the most outstanding female student-athlete at the conclusion of the 2016 campaign.
Serviss played 20 games in net over her career as a Friar, recording 324 saves. She finished her career with a .556 winning percentage and was presented the Coaches' Award at the 2017-18 team banquet. A four-year SAAC member, she was a major contributor to the Friars' community service initiatives. In 2016-17, she organized the inaugural Mental Health Awareness Game for the women's hockey program. She planned the second-annual game this winter, as well as spearheading the department's Adopt-A-Family initiative.
Miller played in 34 career games as a Friar. He holds a 0.92 goals against average, a .805 save percentage and a 19-8-5 overall record. In 2016, he helped lead the Friars to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament, turning in eight shutouts over the course of 16 starts. For his efforts that season, he was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year and to the NSCAA Div. I All-Great Lakes Region Second Team. This past season, Miller was honored with the team's Martin Hayes Defensive Most Valuable Player Award. Away from the field, he is a three-year SAAC member and currently serves as President. Miller also is a three-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team selection. This past fall, he also was tabbed as a BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete Award winner.
