PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College senior long-stick defender Jarrod Neumann (Springfield, Mass.) was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for lacrosse on April 17. It marks the second time this season that Neumann has earned the league's top defensive honor, having previously been tabbed Defensive Player of the Week on Feb. 27.
Neumann, a Face-off Yearbook Preseason All-America honoree, anchored the Friars' defensive effort in a 9-7 victory over BIG EAST foe Marquette on April 15 in Providence, R.I. Coupled with Denver's victory over St. John's, Providence qualified for the BIG EAST Championship for the second-consecutive year. Neumann led a defensive unit that helped keep Marquette's Andy DeMichiei scoreless throughout the game. DeMichiei has 22 points on the year with 11 goals and 11 assists. Additionally, Neumann and the Friars have held their opponents to single-digit goals in 10 of the team's 12 games. Neumann also picked up one ground ball vs. Marquette.
With the victory, Providence improved to 9-3 overall and are in the midst of a five-game win streak heading into Tuesday's non-conference match-up against Brown. Opening face-off is set for 7:00 p.m. at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I.
Earlier today, the Friars found themselves ranked in both major Division I lacrosse national polls for the first time this season. Providence currently ranks 20th in the USILA/Nike Coaches Poll and 20th in the Inside Lacrosse / Maverik Media Poll.
