PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated Marquette University, 9-7, on Saturday, April 15 in Providence, R.I. The Friars improved to 9-3 overall and 3-0 in the BIG EAST Conference. The Golden Eagles moved to 6-5 (2-2 BIG EAST). The Friars recorded their first win over the Golden Eagles in the four-game series.
The Friars closed the first quarter with a one-goal advantage over the Golden Eagles, 3-2. Marquette's attack was a dominant force in the opening minutes of the game notching its first tally at 13:31. Kyran Clark and Ryan McNamara each recorded goals during the first quarter for Marquette. Providence responded to knot the score 1-1 at 6:38 when Ryan Schaffer (Plano, Texas) netted his seventh goal of the season. Ryan Nawrocki (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Conner Byrne (Hicksville, N.Y.) also registered goals during the opening quarter of play.
Providence maintained the lead throughout the second quarter and the Friars entered the locker room with a 5-3 edge over the Golden Eagles. Providence's Austin Goltz (Orchard Park, N.Y.) (12:31) and Keenan Assaraf (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) (7:25) scored for the Friars. Each of the Friar goals were assisted by Damon Currie (Guelph, Ontario, Canada). Marquette's lone goal of the quarter was scored by John Wagner at 14:05.
The Friars held the lead for the entirety of the third quarter and outscored the Golden Eagles, 3-2. Two of the Friars' three goals came with under one minute remaining in the quarter. Assaraf registered his second goal of the game (57.7) and Brendan Kearns (Wantagh, N.Y.) scored with less than one second left in the third quarter. Joshua Keller (Grand Rapids, Mich.) also registered a tally for the Friars to give the team an 8-5 lead heading into the final frame. Tanner Thomson and Jack Zerrillo each score a goal for the Golden Eagles.
Tate Boyce (Matthews, N.C.) put in a phenomenal performance during the third quarter, including an impressive kick save to maintain the Friars' lead throughout the quarter. He registered four saves during the third stanza.
Marquette made a late push in the fourth quarter outscoring the Friars, 2-1. Goltz registered the lone Friar goal at 10:45. Marquette's McNamara and Robbie Pisano scored at 13:18 and 5:46, respectively.
Boyce recorded eight saves on the game to Golden Eagle Cole Blazer's four.
The Friars will be back in action on Tuesday, April 18 for a 7:00 p.m. match up against cross-city rival Brown University at Chapey Field.
