PROVIDENCE, R.I. - It was announced today [March 29] by Providence College Athletics Director Bob Driscoll that men's lacrosse Head Coach Chris Gabrielli has signed contract extension.

"Chris has been an excellent leader and mentor for our student-athletes," Driscoll said. "He has shown a strong ability to recruit and develop players. We are excited about the future for Friar lacrosse. Our ultimate goal is to compete for BIG EAST and national championships."

In 2017, the Friars have posted a 6-3 record and are currently receiving votes in the USILA/Nike Division I Coaches Poll. Two of the Friars' three losses were decided by just one goal, and in both instances, came at the hands of nationally-ranked opponents No. 6 Hofstra (11-10) and No. 18 Boston University (8-7, 2OT). In all, the Friars' three losses have been decided by a combined total of four goals.

A year ago, Gabrielli guided the Friars to the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament. The Friars fell to top-seeded and No. 1-ranked Denver, 17-8, on May 5 in Denver, Colo.

Currently in the midst of his fifth season with the Friars, Gabrielli has developed several of the program's top players. In 2015, he saw Peter Badgley '15 earn the program's first-ever BIG EAST Goaltender of the Year award. That same year, Badgley became the first Friar to earn All-BIG EAST First-Team recognition.

Current Friar senior defenseman Jarrod Neumann joined Badgley as a First-Team honoree in 2015, and has since become the first Friar to earn All-BIG EAST First-Team recognition in multiple seasons (2015, 2016). Current sophomore goaltender Tate Boyce became the first Friar freshman to earn All-BIG EAST First-Team honors in 2016, and is putting together a solid sophomore campaign in 2017.

In all, Gabrielli has mentored six All-BIG EAST selections, who have been acknowledged on the First or Second Team a total of seven times. He also prides himself on his players' success in the classroom, as 80 of his student-athletes have been recognized as BIG EAST All-Academic selections.

At the conclusion of the 2013 campaign, Gabrielli was honored as New England Coach of the Year. He also has been selected as a Head Coach of the Division I/II North team in the upcoming North/South Classic, which will be hosted by Providence College on May 26.

"I would like to sincerely thank Bob Driscoll and Father Shanley for their support. I would also like to thank my past and current assistant coaches, as well as the student-athletes that I have had the privilege to coach here at Providence College. Finally, I want to thank our proud alums for their contributions."

"The commitment to lacrosse here at PC has elevated each year, culminating with reaching a fully funded status [scholarships] and the completion of Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. These resources, coupled with the advancement of our business school and completion of The Ryan Center for Business Studies has pushed our brand to a new level. Providence College is undoubtedly a destination, where elite student-athletes have the opportunity to compete at the highest level within the BIG EAST Conference and beyond, while earning a prestigious degree. We are excited about the direction our program is headed."

The Friars open BIG EAST Conference action on Saturday, April 1 against St. John's in Queens, N.Y. Opening face-off is set for 1:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
