The Providence College men's lacrosse team fell at No. 3 Brown, 16-10, today (April 19).
The Friars were the first to get on the board with a goal from freshman Joseph McHale (Bernardsville, N.J.) at the 6:59 mark of the first quarter to put the Providence up 1-0. Brown responded with three unanswered goals, two of which game in the first quarter, while the third came in the second quarter to make the score 3-1.
At 11:28 in the second quarter, senior Will Mazzone (Stony Brook, N.Y.) notched his first goal of the game to close the gap to 3-2 in favor of the Bears. Mazzone was assisted by freshman Brendan Kearns (Wantagh, N.Y.).
The Bears then extended their lead to 5-2 with back-to-back goals at 9:54 and 8:42.
At 4:55 in the second quarter, McHale fed the ball to Mazzone who collected his second goal of the game to make the score 5-3.
With 1:17 remaining in the second quarter, Brown tallied another goal to close out the half leading the game 6-3. At the conclusion of the first half, Providence freshman Tate Boyce (Matthews, N.C.) had recorded 10 saves.
Brown's Kyle Bellistri opened the third quarter with his second goal of the game at 11:11 to extend the Bears' lead to 7-3.
Providence junior Keenan Assaraf (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) responded with his first goal of the game at 8:39 to close the gap to 7-4.
Brown then registered another goal before freshman Nick Hatzipetrakos (Syossett, N.Y.) tallied a goal of his own for the Friars to make the score 8-5.
The Bears' then responded with four-unanswered goals to gain a 12-5 advantage.
At 1:33 in the third quarter, freshman David Procopio (Syracuse, N.Y.) closed the gap to 12-6 with an unassisted goal, which was then followed by another Brown goal to close out the quarter (13-6).
The Bears' opened up the fourth quarter with two unanswered goals to make the score 15-6. Soon after, Assaraf notched back-to-back goals to tally a hat trick and close the gap to 15-8.
At 4:21, senior Michael Perettine (Farmingdale, N.Y.) scored his first goal of the game off a feed from Mazzone to make the score 15-9.
Brown halted the Friars' momentum with a goal at 3:06 to extend its lead to 16-9.
At 2:14, Kearns tallied his first goal of the game to make the final score 16-10.
All-in-all, Boyce collected 17 saves on the night, while junior Jimmy Cunningham (Syracuse, N.Y.) picked up a team-high five ground balls. With the loss, the Friars fall to 7-6 on the season, while Brown improves to 11-1.
"I thought the end of the third quarter when Brown scored three man-up goals during a non-releasable penalty allowed them to pull away a bit," said head coach Chris Gabrielli. "Brown is a very good team, and our young group will learn a lot from tonight's game."
The Friars will return to action on Saturday, April 23 for their final home game of the season against No. 2 Denver at 12:00 p.m. Prior to the game, there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony for the official dedication and grand opening of Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium, as well as recognition of the graduating seniors as part of Senior Day.
