PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College men's lacrosse Head Coach Chris Gabrielli announced today [Oct. 6] that junior James Barclay (Toronto, Ontario), sophomore Tate Boyce (Matthews, N.C.), and seniors Jimmy Cunningham (Syracuse, N.Y.), Austin Goltz (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and Jarrod Neumann have been selected as team captains.

"We are very proud to announce our captains for 2016-17," Gabrielli said. "These young men have proven to their teammates and coaches that they can consistently lead themselves at a high level each and every day, and that they also possess the qualities necessary to lead others. Our five appointed captains will do a great job in this leadership role, as they will each go about it in a different way that compliments one another and suits the needs of the team."

Barclay, a defender, has started all 30 games during his two-year career with the Friars. He has totaled 58 groundballs and 22 caused turnovers with the Friars, including career highs of 31 groundballs and 13 caused turnovers as a sophomore in 2016. Barclay earned BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll recognition on Feb. 15, 2016.

Boyce, a goalkeeper, enjoyed an impressive rookie campaign with the Friars and finished the year as an All-BIG EAST First-Team selection. In 936 minutes of action, Boyce posted a 10.71 goals against average and a 0.526 save percentage. He collected 185 saves overall and picked up 32 groundballs. Boyce was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Feb. 22, 2016.

Cunningham, a defender, has played 43 career games for the Friars, including 31 appearances in the starting line-up. He has compiled 122 groundballs and has caused 48 turnovers during his career. During the 2016 season, he recorded career highs in groundballs (52) and caused turnovers (20). Cunningham also has one assist to his credit, which he tallied as a freshman in 2014. He was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Mar. 28, 2016.

Goltz, an attackman, has played 14 career games and has appeared in the starting line-up five times. During his tenure with the Friars, he has accumulated six points on six goals, and also owns 14 groundballs and three caused turnovers. Goltz is a member of Chi Alpha Sigma, which is a national scholar-athlete society that recognizes student-athletes who have excelled in the classroom and in athletic competition. The organization honors student-athletes who have earned a varsity letter while maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.4-or higher, throughout their junior and/or senior years.

Neumann, a defender, is a two-time All-BIG EAST First-Team selection for the Friars. To date, Neumann is the only player in program history to earn First-Team honors in multiple seasons (since the BIG EAST began sponsoring lacrosse in 2010). He has started 44 of the 45 games he has played during his career and owns 89 groundballs and 51 caused turnovers. Last season, Neumann finished the year with a career-high 42 groundballs and 19 caused turnovers. Offensively, Neumann has tallied three points on one goal and two assists.
