PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College women's ice hockey Head Coach Bob Deraney announced today, Sept. 3, that Derek Alfama has joined his staff as an assistant coach. Alfama replaces Meredith Roth, who resigned to take the head coaching position for the St. Norbert's College women's ice hockey team. "We are excited to add Derek to our staff and hockey program," said Bob Deraney. "We had a lot of interest and outstanding candidates to choose from. The addition of Derek is a home run for us, the athletic department, and Providence College. His ability to recruit, work with, and develop our forwards, along with his high level of integrity and work ethic make him the perfect fit for our staff." Alfama comes to the Friars after serving as an assistant coach for the women's ice hockey team at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), where he began in 2013 and spent two seasons with the Engineers.

Prior to his time at RPI, Alfama served as the assistant coach at The College of the Holy Cross. Alfama worked with the Crusaders for two seasons and in both seasons, he helped lead the team to the ECAC Open Championship game.

Alfama spent three seasons as an assistant coach with the Norwich University Cadets (2008-2011). During his three seasons with the Cadets, Alfama helped the team to three NCAA Division III Tournament appearances, including the quarterfinals in the 2008-09 season and runner up in 2009-10. Norwich won the NCAA Championship in 2011. While at Norwich, Alfama was a part of the staff who received the American College Hockey Association Division III Women's Staff of the Year Award in two of his three seasons.

Alfama, a 1996 graduate of Norwich, received a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. He was a four year contributor of the Cadet's men's ice hockey team. During his senior season, Alfama served as captain and was the recipient of the Robert Priestly Award.
